We are here for Season 20, Episode 71 of The Adventures of Pipeman here on W4CY Radio at www.w4cy.com.
Pipeman got to do media coverage at a local stop on at The Pipeman Radio Tour. What an amazing show with Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Starset, and Kami Kehoe at the iThink Financial Amphitheatre thanks to Live Nation. Let's recap all the music & entertainment.
Then , we travel to the North for a spacey interview with a Canadian cosmic metal band called The Astral Prophets about their latest Single "Invasion" (feat. Jeff Black) released October 1st.
Calgary, AB’s cosmic metal force The Astral Prophets are set to unleash their long‑awaited full‑length album “Invasion,” due out on October 30th, 2026. next evolution of their self‑coined genre “Power Groove.
The concept and theme of the band is designed around the idea of a not‑so‑distant, roboto‑cratic dystopian future. Space, aliens, techno-organic viruses, the works!” adds Bergin.
“Invasion is a roller coaster of an album… themes of anger, retribution, causality, and madness, but also love and longing, conveyed with sci-fi and cosmic overtones,” says Bergin.
The album artwork depicts Earth on the brink of collapse as an alien mothership tears through a wormhole to terraform the planet, a visual centerpiece for the album’s dystopian universe.
Its musical roots stretch back to a tongue‑in‑cheek Scythia track called Fort Make Money, a satirical nod to rig life in Fort McMurray. Savage hammered out the chorus riff within hours, and the band quickly recognized its glam‑rock DNA, echoing the swing and attitude of earlier The Astral Prophets cuts like “Cybernetic Doom” and “Firewall.” When the band first played it live, the bridge, solo, and final chorus were so addictive they looped them repeatedly just for the joy of it.

15 Yo, it's Thursday. I thought it was Wednesday, but it's actually Thursday. I'm just kidding. But like, We're kind of doing the Wednesday show on Thursday. Cause I think we did the Tuesday show on Wednesday and Monday show we did on Monday. So I don't even know what happened on Tuesday, but this is the adventures of pipe man here on W4CY radio and talk to our TV. And I'm here with studio nut that I'm not in the studio because studio nut had the flu and I had enough of the festival flu shit all year that I have not stepped foot. Well, lie i stepped foot in the studio i think a couple days ago on the weekend i kind of basically went in like with full-on you know gear on my head and uh not touching anything and just dropping something there and ran out and but exactly full-on full-on because i don't want no fucking flu and and It could have been bad if he gave me the flu. Just saying.
39 How long were you sick? For like 52 days? It was three weeks. Oh my God. See, I would have killed you. I'm Spanish. I had the flu, but it wasn't the Spanish flu. I was going to ask you that too. Is that even still a thing? Or did COVID wipe that out? I don't know, but did you hear about the one person in a lab that died because she broke the wrong vial? Oh, I didn't hear about that. Tell me about that. It's this lab that they do studies to come up with solutions for diseases and control and stuff like that.
22 And apparently she dropped a vial. The vial had a very, very contagious disease that We don't have a cure for. And she died. Oh, well. That's what happens when you do that mad science. I'm just saying, you know, like maybe we shouldn't be messing with all this stuff. Yeah, because it's kind of like on one hand, you're trying to find the cure for something that we don't have a cure for. But if you're the one who spreads it and we still don't have a cure and you're the only one who can come up with a cure and you're the first one to go. Yeah, that's not good. That's not good. I think that's the basis of the walking dead.
03 That's how it happened. Let's make a disease that we don't have yet so we can come up with a cure that we don't have yet. I don't know, though. I would really like to become a zombie because there's a few people in my life I'd like to eat, even recent ones, and not eat in a good way and not eat in a silence of the lambs way either. Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about cannibalism. I'm already dead and I'm a zombie. I'm just eating their brain. Well, that is what happens on Silence of the Lambs. So maybe I should backpedal all of what I just said. Just saying. It was not good. And who are these people trying to grab me behind me? No, seriously. They are the zombies. So do you know who they are? Let's see how much you know. Do you know who they are?
00 I don't think so. No. Oh boy. I, why don't you take a guess? I want to see if you can guess. Let's see if you're, if you're like rebel or you're better or worse. That's, that's the great. It could be one of two things, or maybe it's the same thing. Cosmic ribs, the astropy. Uh, yeah, you're, you're kind of like mixing all the words up, but yes, you're, You're somewhere in there. You want to take a 100% guess? Let's just take a risk. Cosmic Rips.
40 No. That's not the name in a band, man. That's just what they're doing in their songs. Like, come on. That was a rebel answer, okay? I'm sorry, but that was a rebel answer. Because the title for the. the thing says the Astro P but I don't know if that's cut off or. There's supposed to be more see I thought you were technologically advanced because you could have hit edit up there hit the drop down menu and highlight over it and you would see it's not the Astro P and for God's sakes you're the one that edited the interview that we're going to play on this show today very soon And you don't know the name of the band. It's the Astral... No, it's not what you're thinking, okay? Get that out of your head. It's the Astral P... What's the rest of the word? Pro... Pro.
44 Pro. Pro. Prodigy? No, that's the band, though. Prophets. Come on, now. If you're going to be on this show, you need to do some research, okay? Don't be like Rebel. So, yeah, too bad. She's got to do another show or something or else I'd have her on here and harass her instead. But now you got to get harassed. And so, yeah, the Astral Prophets, very cool band. It's funny because they started as this other band originally. It's not all the same members, but the person that formed it. And it was like folk metal. And he basically just got tired of doing folk metal. So he went as far as he could from folk metal and went out into space.
41 The irony of that was, is that I interviewed them yesterday. Okay? So yeah, people, it is a pre-recorded interview, but it's It was live when I did it. I even was smart, okay, because I'm doing this show, and I decided to wear the same shirt I was wearing during the interview. I don't think I've taken it off in two days because I was preparing for this show right now, okay? But that way, it kind of looks like, you know, it is today, but it was really yesterday. But it's okay because we don't really need it till tomorrow, but we're going to play it today. And the reason we're going to play today is the irony. So the night before, so little did I know the Pipe Man Radio Tour wasn't over, but now I have local shows. And sometimes I really dig that because it's like 10 minutes or half an hour to get back home. Unless it's down in Fort Lauderdale, which I did that show last week down in Fort Lauderdale. It was two hours to get there.
47 An hour to get home, but I'm driving home at like midnight. So Our drives at midnight aren't usually fun. It was okay, though. I didn't fall asleep more than three times. But I made it. And that's all that counts. Now, I didn't fall asleep. I have fallen asleep on drives like that, though. I have to admit. Did you know that falling asleep while driving or driving while tired is considered more dangerous than driving while intoxicated? Did you know that one? That's what they say, but I've seen more intoxicated people get into car accidents than people falling asleep.
32 Well, that's because you see them. Because while you're asleep getting in an accident, you're not seeing them and seeing the other asleep people. Have you ever fallen asleep driving? I've gotten sleepy, but not like fully on. Oh, man. Back in the 80s, in the Sunset Strip days, there were times like I would go to Pasadena or Irvine or somewhere. It was like, I don't know, an hour to hour and a half drive home after being at a gig and partying, being a teenager, being stupid. And the beautiful thing is, is in California, they're very thoughtful about people like me. Because they set up driving by Braille. Do you know what driving by Braille is?
26 Those little stumps on the side of the road that wake you up? The little reflectors. And so I would be driving home on the 101 and I'm in the fast lane. That's where I started. I don't know what happened after that. And then Every time I would hit one of those little reflectors, I'd wake up long enough to fall back asleep, but you know, to not change into another lane, especially if it was the, the, left lane because I'm in the fast lane and that would mean that I would hit the center divider so that would not be fun because then you hit that and you bounce off of that and you hit like 15 other cars that run into a tractor trailer and then a bunch of other cars are flipping over that tractor trailer and it's just not a good scene so Thank God that never happened, I don't think. Because there's plenty of rides home that I really don't remember from the 80s.
28 For me, I thought it would be fine to go to Disney and come back in the same day. I woke up at 4 o'clock in the morning, went to Disney all day, and then came back late at night. And that one I had to pull over to take a quick 15-minute power nap. Yep. I was falling asleep behind the wheel. But thank God the other night was right near the studios. So it's not bad. It was at the, I think financial amphitheater here in West Palm beach off of Southern. I love that venue. That venue is really cool. And Oh my God, I go to that place a lot.
10 I think it's the most packed I've seen. And I can't remember when I, I, I have videos I took. You guys can check it out on my socials. I took videos of basically this endless crowd like I was at a music festival, not just a concert. What was cool is four bands played. Here's what's really cool about those four bands that played. First, I want to say I want to thank Live Nation for that because Live Nation is behind having this show and many other shows at the, I think, Financial Amphitheater. They're the reason I was there Doing a review of the show. So them I'm totally thankful for. Because they are badass. Like with this.
53 This was one of the best concerts I've been to. Like it was so amazing. But the thing is. Is what's cool is. Out of the four bands. Can you tell me. One. Okay I'll mention the four bands to you. Well one of them is an artist. And bands. And you tell me which one I never interviewed. Okay? You ready? Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Star Set, Kami Kehoe. Kami Kehoe. You know what? What the hell is wrong with you?
35 You just edited an interview with her that we just did at one of the festivals. Did I? Yeah. Okay. All right. Listen, we're going to have to have a talk after the show because if you don't even know who you're editing, how are you editing them? There's way too many bands with weird names that I can't remember. Well, to be fair, I will be fair that now that Pipe Man Radio Tour is over, just the last like two months, there was over 200 interviews. By the way, I just got recognized by Google like, Like Google sent me a notification that I congratulated me on doing over 5,000 celebrity and music interviews. Holy shit. It's a wonder I can still talk. Oh my God. But yeah, so I'll give you a little slack there, but not really, but for the sake of the show, I'll give you a slack.
39 We'll have a talk after the show, uh, you know, but, Yeah, and she is totally cool. I love Cammie, and she's a great artist. And what was really cool was she looked like she was having so much fun up on stage. I love when artists are having fun on stage. If they're not having fun, how can I have fun? And she was smiling and having the best time. I just think this lineup for this tour of these four bands was perfect. But before I get to more of Cammie, Since you were wrong, let me give you the correct answer. None, because I've interviewed all four. As a matter of fact, I was trying to remember the last time I interviewed Chevelle, so I Googled it while I was at the show.
26 And I'm like, I just Googled, Pipe Man Radio interviews Chevelle. And you know what the Google AI said? Can you guess that? It's not going to be the same. Did you know that when you Google stuff nowadays with AI, it's never the same answer? I've tested it already. Like I'll do the same search one after another, after another, and it comes up with different answers. So you might not even find the answer I got last night, but it said, oh, Pipe Man has interviewed Chevelle many times. I'm like, oh, okay. And then named off all these festivals.
09 Like I had a long list of festivals. He interviewed them here and here and here and here. I'm like, so now I have realized that all my digital assistants, whether it be Alexa. Oh, no, not you. Not you. Goodbye, Alexa. Or Siri. Oh, she gets mad when I call her Siri, too. She's going to give you the silent treatment now. Oh, my God. so she did yesterday she's like I'm not Siri I'm Alexa she said it to me because I was mistakenly saying hey Siri.
49 So anyway I did that once and he told me I don't know who that is but if you need me I'll be here. Yeah that's Alexa she does that I gotta stop saying her name man she's gonna pop up again like she's not now she's waiting till the time that she could really ruin the show, but then, you know, Gemini, Claude, all of them. Like if I want to find out stuff about myself, we are like the ultimate lazy. Now we're not even researching other people. We're researching ourselves and the AI knows better than we do. That's that kind of, I think that's proof of the end of humanity. I really kind of think that.
32 Might be, you know, it's just coming. Oh my God. uh so yeah so okay let me tell you something you know a lot of times you go to concerts and maybe not all the bands are you know like really really good doesn't mean they're bad just like really really good all four bands like were really good but i was talking before about how much fun cammy was having so then afterwards I was, you know, I was out in like the vendor area and she came out and did like a meet and greet with people out there. And every person she was taking a picture with, she was smiling like, and I don't mean smiling, like smiling for the picture. Like she was so happy and have, and I feel so good about that. It's so cool that an artist can feel like that after performing and cause they work so hard, man. And, to see her reaction with every single person that stood online waiting just to take a picture with her.
39 The thing is, it's so hard. People don't realize this. It's so hard to smile that long. I've gone to parties where I have to take pictures with multiple people. After three pictures, my smile looks fake. Yeah, and not the case with her because I was sitting there for a while and everybody, she was just totally thrilled about it. and I love that for her and I love that for all the fans because it makes the fans feel good. Like if you go up and you know that they're really like happy to meet you. Oh my God. What a feeling that is. So, you know, sometimes bands, they do it so much. It's like, okay, you know, it's like a puppy mill, but she, she was, she, she was like so honored and happy about it. So I love that. And then, They had Star Set, and I love those dudes. They put on a great show.
36 I can't even describe it. You guys got to look at my socials. You see on there, but they're from outer space too. That's why I'm combining this show with the, hey, somebody's calling me, but fuck them. I'm doing a show. Did you hear that one? Yeah, I heard the ringtone. Yeah, I forgot to put it on silent, but that's okay. It was probably just a spammer. I should have brought him on the show, actually. But anyway, yeah, they put on such an amazing show with the lights. I mean, they had a setup like headliners have. They had this big structure and all kinds of video and digital stuff.
24 I was talking about this. I wanted the interviews like nowadays, these bands, they can do such cool stuff with the digital, you know, and make such a great performance. I think it's so important to like, if I want to just watch your, you play your album, I'll just sit at home and listen to the album. I want a performance. And that's the beauty of live music. And every one of these bands like top notch performances and star set, you know, they're all like from outer space, you know? So it's like this whole cool space show type of thing. And it, it was fricking amazing. And for every single band, the crowd was singing their songs. That doesn't happen. Usually it's usually like maybe the headline or maybe the second band, But never all of them. So that was really cool, too.
12 I was sitting there and I just kept hearing the whole crowd singing everything. That makes my heart feel so full. So full that for that interview we were talking about, they're going to have to wait a little past 20 minutes. But then we had Chevelle. Now, I love Chevelle. But I have to tell you, I've seen Chevelle multiple times at festivals and their own shows. This was by far the best show I've ever seen Chevelle do. It was freaking amazing. I was so into it. Again, acting like headliners.
57 And oh my God, they were just so good. It was unbelievable. I wish I was going to see them again tonight. It was that good. You know, so and they weren't even the headliner either. But the crowd was singing their songs, too. And again, you guys can check out my socials, Pipe Man Radio. And I put up some videos. I'm going to put up all the pictures and videos from the show. And then also, you know, if you missed a part of the show, it will be on my podcast on the adventures of Pipe Man, Pipe Man and in the pit as well. Both podcasts. You can listen to it anywhere you listen to podcasts.
39 If you want to see this, you can go to the Pipe Man Radio YouTube channel afterwards or W4CY Radio's YouTube channel or Talk4TV' s YouTube channel. Again, I was looking at the crowd. I'm like, this is freaking amazing how many people are here. The whole crowd would be singing songs. It's like being around a campfire singing Kumbaya. except better, because it was Chevelle and all these other bands. And then, of course, the headliner, Breaking Benjamin. Oh, my God. No wonder they're the headliner. It was so freaking good, and most of their songs, the whole crowd was singing the whole time.
27 It was. I also love that they had this kind of... digital production in the video part in the back they kind of had it was it was retro like nintendo so like writing was like nintendo and you know stuff like that uh and uh i think i think a couple of them might have had that there was also i'm trying to remember which band but one of the bands when they were over it said and it might have been breaking band but I can't remember which one it was. It said Game Over, just like you would have in the Nintendo game. Oh, no, you know what? I think it was, hmm, there was also Halo. So, yeah. There was some cool shit. It was a great show. I'm so thankful I went. I'm thankful it's, Local to me.
30 It was so much fun. It was, you know, great being there. And I suggest everybody, if they're coming to your town because the tour is on now, you need to go to the show. Go to Live Nation. Buy your tickets now. Because this was one. I've done a lot of shows this year. This was ranked as one of the best of the whole year because of all four bands. They were phenomenal. So once again, thank you, Live Nation. And on that note, I think we're going to have to get to our other Spacey interview. And basically, so do you want... When I give you the cue, do you want to start or do you want me to start? Can you start? You can start. I can start, yeah. Okay, so maybe... I don't know if we should or not.
22 It's got the intro and the outro, because like I said, it's pre-recorded. Maybe we could like... We'll keep the outro on and maybe you could get past the intro so people don't have to be bored with the intro because they already saw the intro. But I will tell you, go again, go to wherever you listen to your podcast. I prefer you go to iHeart because I'm iHeartRadio talent, but you go wherever you want to go. The Avengers, the Pipe Man, Pipe Man in the pit. And you can see not only a repeat of this show once it posts, or will listen to, but also all the interviews I've done. So if you've got time, you can just binge listen to over 5,000 interviews. How long do you think that would take, Juan?
16 I don't know, about 300 years. Okay, good. So make sure you eat healthy. Because you have to last 300 years so you can go through all the interviews. Eat healthy. Don't put poison in your body. Don't let anybody else poison you. And go to metal shows and get in the mosh pit. That's the pipe man's prescription for living a long life. Look at William Shatner. He did it. If Captain James T. Kirk can start a heavy metal band at 95... You guys can listen to all 5,000 of my interviews. But now, just watch one of them. And this one's really cool. So, roll it, Juan.
07 Hi, you're listening to New Century. I'm W4CY. We're here. This is the Pipe Man here on the Adventures of Pipe Man W4CY radio. And once again, I'm going to the great musicians of the North. There seems to be a lot of them up there. And I love this band. They have some cool music. And we're going to talk about it right now. So let's welcome to the show, Terry. How are you? I'm doing fantastic. It's halfway through the week. It's the last Wednesday of the week.
50 So that's always good to know. Nice. And so you are the Astral Prophets. Now, there's a bunch of them, right? There's a bunch of us, yes. I originally started with me and Celine, old drummer, Scythia. We missed just playing music. So we were like, hey, let's just get together and jam. Well, what bands do we like? Well, we like Clutch. We like Grand Magus. Let's just jam some of these songs. So we pulled AJ in. And then we started. Writing our own. And then it just tumbled. Into COVID, sadly. So we were all geared up. We had our first show, I think, March 6th of 2020. And then next week, the world shut down. It was like, come on. So everything changed up and we've been rolling through members. And here we are just about to release our first full-length album.
45 Eight songs. Comes out October 30th. So next Friday. Nice. And so maybe... You don't even realize it. And COVID was a blessing because maybe the lineup would not been the right lineup had COVID not happened. And who knows what would have happened? Yeah, exactly. It gave me a lot of time to sit and write because I got stuck at home. I think I've said that on a couple other interviews is that if I'm working from home, all it takes is, oh, a quick break. And I just reach behind me for my guitar. You can see it right here. And I just go diddly diddly dee, just like 15 seconds. And then I put it down. And then I pick it up again and go, and put it down. And if something sticks, well, maybe that's a good song. So it was like writing in 15 second intervals just to see what sticks. And then you finally get that riff and you go, okay, I'm going to take this and then build on it. And some songs that you're going to hear on this upcoming album were written like that.
42 So like, I think we just released power of the rift that was written like that. And the opening. Song target locked was definitely written in between zoom meetings. Yeah. I love that. But I also, I've been saying all along that if you're going to take one positive out of that COVID lockdown, is it allowed? Like we were going to get the best music ever out of it because it allowed artists to get jump off the hamster wheel and, and create again, you know, cause you're living this life of, you know, go, go, go, go, go. And so many artists, they, they just keep doing the same thing and they're not even sure that's what they want to be doing, you know? And so it gave artists to say, wait a minute, how do I want my music to sound?
30 Right. Uh, sadly for me during COVID, my workload didn't stop. It just kept going. I'm used to working from home on the road from my phone, laptop. So it just didn't stop. There you go. And it is funny, you know, you and I, we've had a couple of postponements of the interview, but I think it's rather appropriate because we, I basically was covering a show last night and one of the bands playing in the show was Star Set. So I kind of looked at as being related. So maybe as I do my recap for that concert last night is when this interview will air. You know, because it kind of goes hand in hand because you are of... Now, I have to ask you because I haven't seen you guys live. Tell us about your live show.
26 High energy, for one. This new show coming up, we're going to try out some new things. We'll see. But the stage, get up and you've got the photo behind you is what we wear on stage. And then I'm always looking how to make a better live sound. So we've gone digital. A lot of bands are going digital these days where we just bring up the brain. We call it brain, plug it in, boom, go. of our own inner mix. And now my next step is looking to see how to attach a light show to that, but man, that is Mula. So I kind of went in between, instead of programming a light show, I programmed a video show because we just do left and right click track backing tracks. So you just attach it to a video, have it projected and we'll see.
13 If it works. So look, look out for the live footage after next Friday. And I hope it works out. I put a lot of effort into it. And it's going to be really cool. It's like a live visualizer, like what DJs use. I love that though. Cause I find a lot of bands are doing that nowadays, you know, like one band that does it very brilliantly is bring me to horizon and they use lights too. But you know, the show that they do in the background is like ultra cool. And then, you know, like last night, the headliner was breaking Benjamin and they had, like some cool video in the background that was like rolling through all their experiences at shows and stuff like that. So, so I think it's kind of cool. I was just talking to a band today also that they like to get like the, they, they like to get the, the artist likes to get the audience involved as part of making these videos for the videos. But, you know, so, so it's like, instead of having like your professional video being made, that's made for MTV or much music that doesn't even play music anymore.
30 It's like, okay, all these people are, you know, already out there in the audience and everything. And so let's just have them do it. Cause they're already filming it anyways. Yeah. Yeah. We've got a professional videographer for next Friday and I'm hoping to get lots of footage cause I'll take, I'll take your advice and then I'll make one of our new visualizers for another song and incorporate all that live footage. That'd be really neat. So, so what was the impetus to the whole concept of this? What, what happened in your life or what ha what, What made you think of the whole concept of the Astral Prophets?
17 It was trying to get as far away as folk metal as possible. Because when me, Silly, and AJ wanted to form a band, we did not want to be tied to the old city of name at all. So it was like, what's the farthest thing from swords and sorcery? Well, fucking space. Right? Right. And I was like, let's just go with that. So. And if you listen to the music, you can't hear any of that folk metal influence in there at all. We don't even gallop, man. It's not even a song that gallops. Cause I was like anything that could even someone go, aha, there's a little bit of folk. Nope. Got rid of it. Can't have it just drift riffs straight for four. I don't think there's any six, eight or three, four, any kind of swing. Oh no, not, not swing. There are songs that are swung, but like in the rock and roll style, And yeah, I just didn't want to be kind of pushed into that box because I felt like that was really limiting my creativity. Because in those last couple of years with Scythia, I was like, I just don't want to go lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie.
19 I just I don't want to do that anymore. And I'll talk to anyone's ear off about it is that eventually, if you're in a folk metal band, I call it the dichotomy of folk metal. You're either super serious or you're super silly. There's no path. And now I was kind of writing, I was like, well, okay, we have to pick one. And it was like, we could, I love playing those, like just get so smashed drunk songs, but also haven't really, we want to be taken as a serious musician. And it was like, I don't want to, I just want. To play rock and roll with heavy riffs. Right. Right. Just kind of. And I think we read that line really well. We're heavy enough to be considered metal, but we're not so metal that it's not going to exclude the people that like rock and roll.
02 So. And I think that's what makes metal so big nowadays. Instead of separating from rock and roll, I mean, listen, it's all rock, right? Every bit of it's rock, so why try to separate yourself from it? And then you never know who's going to become a fan. Again, using Bring Me Horizon as an example, they went off the path so much that they've built a bigger fan base than ever, but they're still loyal to their old fan base too. So it's like the best of both worlds.
45 I gotta get, we gotta get a fan base for us. You know, it's a hundred people. Woo. We're getting there though. It's being well, the singles have been well received. So I'd say we're picking up momentum. Do those live shows and show them what you're made of. And, I definitely think they need to check out this album because I think the music is badass. And I love what you were saying before, too. Because as an artist, you don't want to be stuck in a box, number one. And you don't want to do the same crap over and over again. No, definitely. And this album does touch all points. We just had a review done by Metal Temple.
25 And if you read it, he... has his finger on the pulse. Exactly. Like we'd come out of the gate, just driving. And then we dip, then we come back up and we dip and we come back up and level out. It's this perfect roller coaster of an album that keeps you excited the entire time. And it doesn't sound like, it doesn't sound like anything. That's not the right thing to say. We were asked, I think when we were getting ready for all this PR, it was like, what bands do you sound like? And all of us went, I don't know. What bands do we sound like? Do we sound like Metallica? A little bit. Do we sound like Guns N' Roses? A little bit. Do we sound like Amaranth? Well, I've never listened to Amaranth.
06 How do I sound like a band I've never listened to? Stuff like that, right? See, but I love that too, because to me, I would never ask that question. Because I think a band should sound like themselves. Agreed. Especially nowadays. Because what I've found a lot nowadays, especially within certain parts of the genre, is they use this formula to make metal. And metal was never a formula. It was experimentation. And even within a certain section of the genre, the bands didn't sound the same. Like you mentioned Metallica. You take the big four of thrash, they don't sound like they're from the same exact genre. No, but it's all thrash. Yes. I mean, of course they're all metal, but could you pin them all to be sounding the same? Not even close.
02 No. You know, and I think that is important, especially nowadays. You have to sound unique. So like my answer, if I was a band and a press person was asking me questions, and let's say I was your band, I would say, oh, I think we sound like the Astral Prophets. Yeah. Cause I'm a little bit of a wise ass in that department. I appreciate it. But yeah, you want to sound like yourself. Like you take bands. Okay. Take a band like Led Zeppelin. Like, can you imagine like if somebody asked them that no, they're Led Zeppelin, they're black Sabbath, you know, that's who people's like, you want to be the ones that the other bands are asking that question too.
48 Right. They say, you're the band they sound like, you know? One day, I hope. Well, there you go. I think it will happen because one thing I've learned through interviewing a lot of Canadian bands is, man, you guys are all like the greatest freaking musicians, man. I credit it to, you know, having to be in 40 below weather, you know, stuff. Like, what else are you going to do? But, you know, practice your craft, you know, and just like you said, with the guitar right there. Listen, I played guitar while I was younger. I played drums. and I played guitar.
30 I was never dedicated enough to get beyond sucking. And it was like, okay, so like Randy Rhoades was my idol. And then I found out he practiced eight hours a day. I'm like, fuck that. I've got other things to do. Exactly, man. And so, like, I think that is the key. The great musicianship is every great musician I ever know, their instrument is always with them. Yeah. Sometimes just nonstop, like drummers, they're drumming on everything all the time. In their cars. I'm bad for that. I drum in my car. I'm not even a drummer. I'm just... Yeah, I do that too. Like, it's funny because I did play drums and I did play guitar.
17 that when I'm in my car blasting the music, I might confuse people if they're in the car because I go back and forth from air drums to air guitar. Depends on what car this dog is. That's why, okay, when I learned how to drive, we learned how to drive with our knee. Steer well down, the knee doesn't steer it, You know, and there you go. But yeah. So tell us a little bit more about this album, what you want the listeners to know and how they can get the album, check out the album and check out everything else you got.
03 Well, to start with your last question, it's going to be available 8 a.m. on October 30th on Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp and YouTube. So. Pick your poison there. We do have physical CDs. We just got them in yesterday. I haven't had a physical CD since 2018. I was like, Oh, real music, physical media. Right. So yeah, that's, that's exciting. I would like to get vinyl printed one day. I've got quite the record collection record player downstairs. I got to fix it. It's broken. But the album is, I want to say, beautifully done. Give it to Jeff Black, who mixed and mastered it.
44 I did all the recording, majority right here. And it's not like a $ 1, 000 studio. It is literally mom and pop shop in here, just barely making it work. But it worked really well. Well, it counts. It counts. So when you listen to it and it sounds this giant, it's like, you guys can do it if you've got the right... patience and equipment at home you can make it work um your album is super riff driven awesome melodies awesome harmonies not uh it's not your typical metal album it sounds fantastic i don't know we got the masters back we were like oh man definitely play it with a big subwoofer because i made sure to make the bass just stick out like a sore thumb the bass player i was like i am not turning the bass down at all on this mix mostly because i pointed jeff towards two bands uh one of them is called eastern high and the other one is molly baron and they've got two albums that just have this insane low end bass mix and i said i want to sound like this right without taking away from the other instruments you just have to have this low foundation and the entire album has that this is awesome rock solid foundation and then everything's put on top of it and.
01 Perfect puzzle You're going to go for a ride. It doesn't let down until song five, where you finally get a breather. And then it picks back up. And it's really tough to pick my favorite song. I think the best sounding song is World Eater. That one came from the back. That was the song that got the least amount of love. And then all of a sudden, it came to the very end. This song's amazing. That happens a lot, I noticed. It does. It does. I was very surprised. I was like, I think that's my favorite song. But my true love is definitely the Hyperdrive and Inside the Hyperdrive. So it's a song that flows into an instrumental of itself.
45 And that song just doesn't stop, even live. When we get to the time for the guitar, so I look over at Harley, the other guitar player, and I was like. Oh, God. Oh, we made it. Oh, I can sit back and relax. And it's the same thing on the album. It doesn't stop. That song just doesn't stop. And then you get this. Awesome instrumental chill out where we just groove. You know, there's that riff. I had that riff in my arsenal since, I think, 2019. I wrote this riff and I was like, this is really cool.
29 And I can't. Kept trying to use it in the song, it didn't work. Tried to use it in the song, didn't work. Tried to use it in this song, didn't work. And I thought, I'm going to do it this way. And I made it work, and I was like, that's not enough. I have to do it in another song. So the whole ending of the song, we just made the separate song. And it's the last song of the album. And it's that one riff that just keeps playing. over and over again, and it's fantastic. I love it. Got a nice phaser on the bass, and it just grew with a cool guitar harmony, and the album just chills out as you slip inside the hyperdrive and go off to Cosmos Unknown.
23 So, a couple things I have to say about what you said. One is that I love what you said about the bass. So what that tells me is this album does not sound like Injustice For All. No, it doesn't. I love that album, but my God, where's the bass? Exactly, exactly. And then also even the title, the title song title signal single from the album even features Jeff Black too so like so that's pretty cool you have him part of the production but also part of the song too.
21 Yeah I know when we created that song AJ was like I think we should get Jeff to do Dueling Guitarist Oh, yeah. That sounds awesome. Let's get that done. And that was one of the last things that come in was like, oh, that sounds amazing. So now I have an idea for a U.S. tour for you. Okay. Especially based on what you said at the end going into Hyperdrive. Okay, so I don't know if you're aware of this up there in the north, but there's somebody who launched a brand new metal band at Riot Fest this year.
14 And he's 95 years old. Oh, I know this. And it's Captain James T. Burke. I was going to say William Shatner. So how cool would that like to go on tour it's like you got you guys as this like cosmic metal band and him at as the space traveler.
07 Yeah. That would be really cool. I would love to do... I haven't. Toured since 2018. My last tour was to the States, so it has been a while. My bones are getting old, but We're going to try and put a tour together. They're just small Canada. And then if the track holds, you know, a US tour, if we can get the visa, if everything calms down between our two countries.
48 It would be nice. Yeah, good luck with that. Yeah, I know. It was difficult trying to get visas back then. I can't even imagine what it's like to get it now. You know what's funny about that? I just saw an article the other day that your country made it easier for U.S. citizens to get citizenship. there. My wife is from the U.S., so I know how to immigrate people, actually. I just have to marry them.
29 Right, well, there you go. But there's apparently they loose, they made it much more lenient, your government government made much more lenient for us to get citizenship. It's like, I think that's like the ultimate screw you to, uh, you know, the guy in charge over here. Hey, come on over. It might be cold, but come on over. What is funny about that is years ago, uh, like 2016, when he first got elected over here, I, uh, did this bit on my radio show. Cause part of my radio show is like shock jockish. And I, I, I did this bit with my cohost and I said to her, I'm like, Hey, did you hear what he did now?
24 And I said, so basically he, he said that, uh, he was going to, uh, and it had, it had to do with P cause people then, uh, They were talking about, oh, if he gets elected, they're going to leave to Canada. And I said that he was going to start. Oh, little did I know what was going to go on later. But I said he was the first country ever or the first president ever to start a war with Canada because we're pissed off because you guys are taking all our people over to Canada. And she bought into it hook, line, and sinker, which tells you the state of how our country is right now anyway, because that's exactly what happens. I can say whatever I want, and one side or the other side will believe it.
16 They won't even check it. Such the world we live. In, right? I know, right? So, you know, I don't know. I saw that article. I'm like, huh, that sounds interesting. And then I thought about the coldest time I ever had in my life. And I've been like up to the North Pole. I'm from New York and New Jersey originally. But the coldest I've ever been in my life was Niagara Falls. Oh, I bet. On New Year's Eve. But it wasn't even that cold. It was just wet. Well, that was the part of the problem. You know, I have a friend, she's up in Calgary and she's always inviting me to come up there. And I'm like, I don't think I'm coming up during the winter.
59 Sorry. It's not too bad because my wife is from Florida, right? Oh, yeah. That's where I'm at. Yeah. And so she was really worried about what the winters were going to be like in Calgary. And I said, well, you know, if you had to pick anywhere else in the prairies, this is probably the best spot to get it. And even when it hits, you know, colder than Mars, like minus 50 here. It only happens for like a little bit. You get that cold snap. And she's like, well, how do people get to work? It was like, you don't, you just like the city shuts down. Like you're like the essential services will run. And you know, as long as it's not windy out and you're bundled up, you're okay. Your car probably won't work unless you have a garage.
41 And she she's used to it. Now she's like, I, she prefers the seasons compared to the, super hot, super cold of swamp past the AC every day. Oh yeah. I hate that shit. Like I always said, I never really wanted to be here and I always, and now I ended up stuck here, but I always said, man, I missed the change of seasons. But it's beautiful fall right now. It is what you get used to too. Cause like, I'm not really as used to the cold anymore, but you know, the thing is the cold isn't what's bad. You mentioned what's bad. It's when the fricking wind kicks up. The wind and the wet. Yeah. Oh my God. That's horrible. You know? So I could imagine 40, 50 below, and then you have like a, a big wind thing going on. Yeah. Yeah. That's no good.
33 They're not calling for too much snow this year, which it's going to be a mild winter, I think, which is yay. Okay. Which means droughts next year. Ooh. Right. Right. See, I like the snow because it usually warms up the snow, but I like it for the first couple of days. I don't like after the snow where it gets freezing cold and it gets dark and ugly and frozen and stuff like that. But like I'll take snow over freezing rain any day of the week, to be honest. Agreed. I've seen awful things in Montreal when they get the freezing rain, right? Snapping power lines, trees. We don't get that here. Black ice. Well, we'll get black ice, but not like they get it out there.
17 Yeah, exactly. The one thing, I. Wanted to point this out because I don't know if you know about this, but I've explained it to the wife, is the pressure headaches you can get in Calgary because we can go from minus 40 to zero degrees in a matter of 48 hours. And it will knock you on your ass if you're susceptible to pressure changes. Oh, yeah, that makes sense. It's like a bad case of allergies. All of a sudden, you're like, what is wrong with me? And you're like, oh, it's 10 degrees outside all of a sudden. And yesterday, it was, you know, minus 40. Right. Insane temperature swings here. Yeah, and see, that's something, like, I love the UK a lot, too, because I do a bunch of festivals there, but I can't deal with the bipolar weather. My thing is...
04 So I remember once I went to Chicago, it was 70 degrees. It was beautiful out the next day. I'm walking out of the hotel in shorts and I'm like, Oh shit. And it was, it was 20 degrees the next day. And this was in the middle of June, the end of June. Okay. And I'm like, yeah, no, I'm not down with living in a place that you can't depend on it not being 20 in June. You know, like, like when it's winter, I'm okay with it. It's supposed to be cold. When it's summer, no. Get the hell out of here. It's like that here. If it's the summer and you leave without a hoodie or a sweater, you're making a mistake.
47 You always got to have one because the moment the sun goes behind the clouds, boom. It'll be 30 degrees during the day and the moment the sun dips below the horizon because we're up so high. I forget what our elevation is. We're up really high. It just immediately cools off. So yeah exactly so yeah everybody's got to check out your album invasion october 30th go check out everything though and uh let let's let's push this band into space people do it well thanks a lot for making us great music and thanks for being on the adventures of pipe man thank.
