04 Hi, you love them too, Yes, that's true. W Wow, Cray you. Welcome to Rockville, North America's largest rock festival is finally here. This is the Adventures Bie Man here on W four c Y Radio, and I'm here at Welcome to. Rockville with Shane from Silverstein. Nice here. I gotta tell you, first of all, what a badass venue. Right the Daytona speed went. Yeah, We're sitting in the middle of the track right now, right, It's like, yeah, pretty awesome. My dad would be geeking out. I think I grew up every Sunday watching NASCAR with him. He would be like, whoa, this is crazy. And I didn't really realize this is our first time here. I didn't really really realize that they did it right in the inside the track.

51 And how about the fact that the wall is not what you see on TV. That's did you see the wall? You think it's like this on TV? It's like straight up and it is. I know you have to hit like I was told, you have to hit eighty miles per hour to gut and stay on it. Yeah, it is crazy. I didn't realize that either. It was just like a slate, like forty five degree. I know, right, But yeah, I don't even know what. It angle that is. It's pretty, it's wild, pretty wild. Yeah? Did you drive on it? On you? It's all right. You actually spat on my battle vest. It lasted since nineteen eighty one and you ruined it, reared it. Yeah. Yeah, we drove here, We drove on the track of the go cart. Now it's so wild, right, Yeah.

33 So have you ever played rock Fille before? No, it's our first time. Wow. Yeah, there's a lot of first timers day. I feel like I've been saying this in interviews today because it's today specifically. I feel like today is warped toward day. Maybe you're right. I think that's what's happened over the last couple of years is that they've opened up sort of the vibe a little bit to I was gonna say, our kind. It's a little like less focus on just like a big mainstream like radio bands. Yeah, and they're expanding it a little bit to some of the artists like ourselves, and that's great. Our bands are worth tickets and people care and it's good to get a little bit of attention on kind of the you said warped bands and the warped scene of.

17 That era and stuff. So yeah, it feels really good to be here and be a part of it. Yeah, And I'll tell you that's why my grandson's here because this is his first festival ever. Why because all bands like you. Yeah, it's awesome and I think that's cool, the transcending of generations, right, And we're seeing it more and more on our tour that we're doing around this festival. There'll be people bringing their kids to the shows a lot more than I've ever seen before. And I think that's really special. Because this year our band is celebrating twenty five years. That blows my mind. It blows my mind too, Oh my god. But for so many people to be coming out and having their children here, and their kids are like digging the words and everything, and it's just it's really cool and something that when we were in the garage in the basement, you was working on this, you.

03 Never never remain ever, you'd never listen. I remember in the eighties, like I was at Metallica's first shows, Slayers first shows and stuff, and all those bands they were all my age, Like I never went to a band that was like some somebody older back then and now I see all these kids out here for bands like you or bands like Metallica, and I'm like, man, that is so cool, Like yeah, dad ever asked me to go to a concert, be like no, I don't want to go see Frank Sinatra or whatever it was. Ye. Yeah, But now for me, it's like my son and my grandson liked the same music as me, Like when in the history as.

45 I's that's really a good point. Yeah, that absolutely is true. And like I have some nephews too that are into music and they're age rangers, I guess thirteen to twenty, and they're all playing guitar and drums and stuff. And I have a little jammer room in my house, so we get all this stuff on and it's like, what are we gonna play? And like the first thing they start playing is Black Sabbath, and I'm like, I know all of these songs, right, Why do. You know all of these songs? And it's like this band, who's just Black Sabbath or Metallica or it's this stuff is just absolutely classic now for every generation blows Like kids are growing up thirteen years old and they're still learning Iron Man and Paranoid and and ib in like those songs the same way that I did when I was and that was old back then too. I guess for me, it's like it was twenty five years old when I was learning to play those songs too, and now it's damn it's old.

37 Like one of the first songs I ever learned. That one of those first songs I ever learned on guitar, what's Heaven and Hell? So it wasn't even Aussie Sabbath, right, Yeah, so it's pretty wild. I just love too that nowadays we're one big family instead of segregated into different genres and different age groups and different ever. Yeah, I hear about the time. This is before my time, but you'll remember, yes, is punk rockers had short hair. Metal people had long hair, and they they didn't you go to a metal show with short hair or vice versa, like you're gonna get beat up, Like you get beat up for having long hair. Oh yeah, that was like that's a wild time I got. You might have talked about this last time, I know, right, And it's funny because that is almost.

19 Hard to fathom now, I guess a really good thing. I think it's great because there was like it's funny even I might mention this last time I talked to you, like, there are some things you liked back then and you couldn't admit you like. So I interviewed who's now a friend of mine, Josie Cotton, who's a new Waiver. Yeah, I couldn't like new Waivers then. So it's like I told her in the interview, like, I wasn't allowed to like you back then. So I'm so glad that I can now tell you that I did like you and not get beat up for it. No, I know. That is the good thing about the quote unquote like TikTok generation is like people are way more open minded to all kinds of music.

59 Speaking to generation. Okay, have you seen that girl Sophie Powers that was on American Idol that she has that shut the fuck Up song? I don't think I know it. You're gonna have to look this. I don't actually laugh, your asshole. I have a TikTok account, but it only I only ever use it when someone like sends me a TikTok and then like the app automatically opens, yeah, and then I close it and then I watch my tiktoks on Instagram like a real adult. You search Sophie on Google. You search Okay, Sophie Powers American idol. You will laugh your ass off. Let's talk about this since you're grabbing. Yeah, we're looking at the battle vest here. This comes from the time you're talking about now. I was along her metal head that love punk. If you look, you'll see GBA, I see GBH, Exploited, Merciful Fate, Dark Angel, Exodus, the Suicide on the air when they were punk.

50 Yeah, four they crossed over. I have coc on. The air when they were punk. Pepper, Yeah, Metallico and Slayer, they're the two prominent names on this thing. Both obviously had big punk influences. Oh yeah, you're slayered in Barbo. Record, Lombardo and Handman were punks, and Carrie and Tom were the metal head. But Tom wasn't even a metal head. He just became one, Like he didn't even like metal in the beginning. Can you imagine that? And he becomes the most one of the most brutal metal singers ever. Wild It just blows my mind. But I remember Talica wearing like when I was a kid, seeing them wearing like Dead Kennedy shirts. And stuff, yeah, fit yeah and bit myth bit and that.

33 Was like, I think that was a big part of people getting over the like made peace a little bit maybe between at least of means. Well, here's the thing, no poser, no posers, okay and okay. So yeah, I was a long hair. I couldn't some of my favorite bands I could never see till like within the last ten years because I would got in my ass beat going to their shows, like the Exploit, GBH Discharge, yeh, dri I, thank god dri. I was the one for well, like one of the first ones to cross over to bring us together. And it was just stupid because I don't know if you know this, but the metal heads we were a small group. The punks were a small group, and we were both getting our acids beat by the jocks in high school? Right, Why did we not band together against the jocks? Like it never made sense to me. So that's why I love today.

21 This Metallica jump in the fire patch is pretty special, Right, I've never seen that logo, Like, it's not the Metallica logo. Everybody knows, like the pointy one. Is this a bootleg patch or is oh. That's a pre kill them All crazy? See even back then, even this one's pre kill them All also, and they didn't even have a Slayer patch yet, So I did that. Yeah okay, but yeah, what's funny that you picked that and the Metallica out is that I was on ship Rock. They're viewing Winston from Parkway Drive. Yeah, and he was geeking out over this totally. But he was like, he's he did the same thing. I'm like, when did they have devils in their logos? Whoa where did this come from?

04 Type of thing? Uh? Jumping the fire? That makes sense, but exactly Sorry, cool man. If there was a band on here that you could play with on this whole thing, is there one you could pick? Onicyle Tendencies there? It is? It's funny. The first band I ever saw was Suicidal Tendencies really mostly true. The first band I ever saw was Bruce Springsteen with my parents three hour show I fell asleep was so boring. Are you a Jersey boy? No, I'm from Canada? Oh okay, See she's from Canada. That's what I'm saying, because it's okay, I'm from Toronto. Usually it's a Jersey boy that has to go with the Yeah, through Springs. No, I got Sharon Leewson. Yeah, that's a that's right. Is that the only Canadian thing?

48 Do people in know? The United States? I think it might be Canadian but anyway, Yeah, So I went to that show and then the that was I don't remember what year it was exactly, but then the following year, Metallica was coming to Toronto and it was Metallica with Danzig and Suicide at Tendencies was the tour. It was the Live Shit, Binge and Purge tour. Nice and I was like Metallica everything and that at that time. This was probably ninety three ninety three, and I walked into so I was like, well, I walked into the show and Suicide Tendency was on stage in the middle of a rant ant psych Mike murrors up there saying something about if. You do what you love and what you believe in, that's being suicidal and he was like a rant like that.

33 I was twelve, being like that was good. Doesn't suicidal mean you want to kill yourself? I was very confused as a twelve year old, but I remember just like seeing that band and energy and I always loved Suicide a Tendencies because they had that like metal punk together thing, which I didn't know what it was at the time because I didn't know what crossover was. And they did and I will have it when I was getting They started it after like I couldn't go to suicide shows because they were still just a venice gang. Then yeah Twoey Boys. They would be in the pit with switchblades and you couldn't be a long hair going into that fit either. But their song Institutionalized was the theme of my generation because at that point in time I lived in LA ninety percent of my friends were put into mental hospitals with that same conversation in that song. Like my best pro life who passed away last year, since thirteen, we went to so many gigs together. That was almost word for word discussions with his parents and he was in one of those places most of my school. It was like people, I don't think realize now why that song went right back then, but that was like that's what happened if parents couldn't control your kid their kid, or you smoke pod or your metal head or you're punk.

53 The mental hospitals used to convince the parents that you need to be locked up. It's nuts. I know, right, it's nuts. Or if you had a. Tattoo or you had a piercing right, Oh, they're criminals. So what else you got going on? You want to talk about that, you want to let people know to look out. Yeah, well we've we just released a new song called Negative Space, one of the best Silverstein songs ever. I I stand by that behind that one. It's got a really funny video too. I live in Las Vegas now and we went to downtown Las Vegas and we shot this video. I'm like a detective. A lot of fun and it also ties into our last video for a song called Don't Get let Me Get Too Low. So it's kind of like a little bit of a theme there people can discover. And that's coming out on an album called Pink Moon, which is coming out in September.

43 Nice. So yeah, it's our second album of the year. Wow. So's we're busy only us and only when we're celebrating twenty five years. It's a busy year and we decided to go full bore a little bit of time off this summer. We're doing the two Warp Tour shows in DC and Long Beach, Longhor Orlando. I won't be in Orlando, but look up for more shows is all I can say right now too, especially in Florida because we are working on coming back nice. I love it because people don't like to come here, especially I do. I live in South Floria. It's like, you got nobody wants to drive down there to drive all the way back yah long State to get Yeah. That's like the Western Canada problem too. It's like people don't want to go all the way to Vancouver and all the way to come back. But being from Canada, and I remember we toured down here in Florida like in the wintertime, and it was like, this is amazing, like escaping the winter and.

35 We're on the beach. And I have loved Florida ever since that. I love it. It feels like a vacation down here. I some bands complain though it's too hot, humidity. I'm like, I don't know, man, It's paradise for me. So I'm it's I totally fun with lizard. I think nowadays I used to love the snow and the cold, and now I'm like, what was I thinking? Oh stupid, No, No, I'll never go back there. You go or go back I'll be in your neck of the woods next weekend for punk bowling. Perfect. I love that. I may see I may see you there. Cool. Any last words you want to share with our listeners? Last words? I might gonna die as you mind of my life. You might, you might in this heat. You might die in this heat or in a mosh pit out there. I may. That's the way. Bus crash, plane crash. We get really dark here, I know, right, or just fall off the wall.

22 If that happens and this is my last interview, then that would be really really wild. Huh. I'd be really honored if you made this your last famous Everyone knows the best career move is dying. I know, right. My last words are yeah, come see us on tour, Come check out our new record, new songs. Thank you for listening to me babble about old punk with my friend. I love it. Thank you either, mrch and thanks for bringing your grandson. This is nice to meet you again, and thanks for sitting in. And hope you're teaching them well, I hope. So what's your. Favorite Green Day album? Nim nim Rod's a good choice. I love Nimrod. He impressed me. I did you say idiot. I don't know, because maybe because they're American idiots. But I brought him to get a guitar. I hadn't heard him play. I just knew he was playing. I'm like, i'll buy you a guitar, and we got a guitar center.

11 Then he starts playing Green Day. I'm like, where the hell did he learn how to do that? Like? I took lessons and played and I still sucked. I couldn't play as good as him. So there you go. You got it. So what's your advice for him? He's you say, he's trying to start a band. Yeah, find a good drummer. Yeah, find a good drummer because they probably have cool parents. You can make a lot of noise in their garage or whatever. That's true. Yeah, just keep it up. Don't get wrapped up in the content stuff and worrying about that. At your age, it's like important to work on your craft and writing and playing and outside of it, and don't get don't get caught up and we got to get followers for our Instagram or whatever.

53 Fun. Just work on your craft and have fun. Of course, it always have fun. If you're not having fun, why I be a musician exactly exactly if you might as well get in I know, finance or something, because you won't make any money doing this. I love it. I love that you're hero. Welcome to Rockville and thanks for being on the Adventures pipe Man. Once again, Thank you, pipe Man. Thank you for listening to the Adventures of Pipe Man on w for CUI Radio.
