We are at Shawshank Prison aka Ohio State Reformatory for the 2025 Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival. The Dillinger Escape Plan is playing and came backstage in the Press / Artist Lounge to talk with Pipeman Radio of W4CY Radio about what it is like to perform at such an iconic location where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. This closed down prison is known to be haunted so when you go to Blood Prison who knows what will happen.

WEBVTT

1
00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:05.639
Hy you have done too.

2
00:00:06.120 --> 00:00:08.679
Yes, that's true.

3
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:12.119
See Why Crazy.

4
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:19.000
Young Incarceration America's rock, metal and tattoo bestory.

5
00:00:19.839 --> 00:00:22.039
This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe

6
00:00:22.039 --> 00:00:25.160
Man W four C Y Radio, and I'm here with this.

7
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:27.559
Has been in Dmitri from the Dillinger Skate Plan.

8
00:00:28.039 --> 00:00:30.160
Nice here at incarceration.

9
00:00:31.399 --> 00:00:36.240
First question is are you gonna get arrested here at incarceration?

10
00:00:36.399 --> 00:00:39.079
Put in the prison for breaking the rules like jumping

11
00:00:39.159 --> 00:00:41.520
off on the fucking top of the stage or something.

12
00:00:41.560 --> 00:00:43.920
I mean, we've already been given a lot of rules

13
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:46.640
and a lot of restrictions, and you know we're getting older.

14
00:00:46.840 --> 00:00:50.119
And I didn't even wear my diaper today, So yeah,

15
00:00:50.159 --> 00:00:52.399
I can't promise that any body of fluids won't touch

16
00:00:52.439 --> 00:00:54.719
the floor and there won't be any kind of Asthmatt,

17
00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:56.280
you know, people to come clean.

18
00:00:56.359 --> 00:00:58.039
But other than that, I don't know what about you.

19
00:00:58.399 --> 00:01:01.039
I would say, unless it's like an accident, will pass out,

20
00:01:01.240 --> 00:01:04.120
you could climb a tower, lose your electrolytes.

21
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:05.959
It's hot out here, wor old?

22
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:07.799
I think that's the factor probably.

23
00:01:08.200 --> 00:01:10.319
I tell you what, when I was watching you guys

24
00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:13.640
at Rockville, you weren't fucking old at all man, Like,

25
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:18.319
I can't believe the energy that came from you guys

26
00:01:18.599 --> 00:01:20.200
in that performance.

27
00:01:20.680 --> 00:01:23.200
I was like, oh my fucking god.

28
00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:26.280
And I've seen you guys before, but that performance was

29
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:27.640
like just I couldn't.

30
00:01:27.319 --> 00:01:30.120
Really well, thank you very much, but yeah, considering the

31
00:01:30.120 --> 00:01:31.680
Florida heat and you saying.

32
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:32.319
That, that's what I'm saying.

33
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:34.239
No, Like I was like, how the fuck are they

34
00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:35.799
doing this in this Florida heat?

35
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:36.359
I don't know.

36
00:01:36.519 --> 00:01:38.879
Yeah, well, thank you. No, we're just having a good time, man.

37
00:01:38.920 --> 00:01:41.319
So it's like when you enjoy it, it's like we

38
00:01:41.480 --> 00:01:46.599
really fully we're not performing, we really are like feeling it.

39
00:01:46.760 --> 00:01:47.719
That's what I see.

40
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:51.000
Yeah, well I'm watching you guys, like you can tell

41
00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:53.560
when somebody's dialing it in or if they're just having

42
00:01:53.719 --> 00:01:54.799
fun or.

43
00:01:54.719 --> 00:01:58.120
If they're like the business side. You guys look like

44
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:00.439
this is just like the best time in your life.

45
00:02:00.519 --> 00:02:01.760
Well, thank you. That means a lot.

46
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:04.680
And this music was written, particularly the music we're playing now,

47
00:02:04.680 --> 00:02:08.039
which is our first music that we wrote in a

48
00:02:08.120 --> 00:02:10.719
time when we had no expectation of people knowing it

49
00:02:10.840 --> 00:02:12.879
or liking it, or ever even hearing it.

50
00:02:12.960 --> 00:02:15.120
So this truly was written for us.

51
00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:18.639
This music was written to express ourselves, and so it

52
00:02:18.680 --> 00:02:21.319
brings us back to that time when we were writing music.

53
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:24.159
Purely just for ourselves, without a fan base in mind

54
00:02:24.199 --> 00:02:26.000
at all. So we're very lucky to be able.

55
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:27.759
To do it, and that's the way it should always be.

56
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:31.039
And to add on, we've been friends since we were

57
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:35.080
like eighteen, so that's thirty years. And to what he's saying,

58
00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:39.120
when we play live, it's really not we're performing. It

59
00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:42.759
feels like we're still teenagers, feeling it how we did

60
00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:46.319
when we wrote it all our songs X amount of

61
00:02:46.360 --> 00:02:49.599
years ago. So it's a beyond a performance for us.

62
00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:52.560
It's just like a you smell something, you remember something,

63
00:02:52.599 --> 00:02:55.240
we hear that we perform. It's more of a feeling.

64
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:58.400
That's where we're coming from, and it's really good to

65
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:00.159
relive that.

66
00:03:00.319 --> 00:03:04.960
So you guys remind me of the time I originally

67
00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.960
came from, Like when I used to see Suicidal and

68
00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.039
I had long hair and I wasn't allowed to and

69
00:03:10.039 --> 00:03:13.199
I'd get my ass kicked, but I'd go anyway. I

70
00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:17.159
was talking before the interview about the first crossover show

71
00:03:17.240 --> 00:03:21.599
ever and it was at this Elks Lodge in Sun Valley,

72
00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:25.639
and it was Suicidal on the before they were Crossover,

73
00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:31.280
it was coc Pree Pepper and it was Descendance on

74
00:03:31.319 --> 00:03:34.120
the punk side and then Possessed Dark Angel and Savage

75
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:37.159
Race on that metal side. There was no security, first

76
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:40.039
show ever punk and metal in the same building, and

77
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:43.000
they like had a roof that was way higher than

78
00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:47.000
this tent and people were climbing up to rafters diving off.

79
00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:50.120
And when I saw you guys at Rockville, like, it

80
00:03:50.199 --> 00:03:51.680
reminded me of that time.

81
00:03:52.199 --> 00:03:54.840
That's sick because I play in Suicide Tenz, so so

82
00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:58.520
that's how that band was a big influence on me.

83
00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:01.560
And I was a little kids skateboarding listening to Suicidal

84
00:04:01.639 --> 00:04:04.639
tend z's but looking at pictures of Rabbit, r Heo

85
00:04:04.719 --> 00:04:08.879
and Mike and definitely Suicidal did have an impact.

86
00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:10.919
On the creation of Dillager for sure.

87
00:04:11.080 --> 00:04:13.400
So there is a similar thing where the fans of

88
00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:17.959
both bands are diehards, but it's a gang, you know.

89
00:04:18.040 --> 00:04:21.000
It's people who are like, this is our thing, it's

90
00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:22.879
ours and I love makes sense?

91
00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.560
Yeah, I love that. What do you think.

92
00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:28.800
About playing at the show Shank Prison.

93
00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:32.560
I didn't realize we were playing until about a week ago.

94
00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:36.160
I know, Stephen King writes all his books. All his

95
00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:38.399
stories are based in New England, so I always thought

96
00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:43.000
this prison was up somewhere in like Maine.

97
00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:43.879
But when I.

98
00:04:43.839 --> 00:04:46.519
Found out it added some juice for me personally as

99
00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:49.199
a fan. So yeah, it's it's.

100
00:04:49.160 --> 00:04:49.920
It's trip, right.

101
00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:52.079
It's not a bucket list thing, but it's definitely like

102
00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:54.319
I get checked that off of like cool things I've

103
00:04:54.319 --> 00:04:57.240
done in life, like I played at Shawshank Prison. Well

104
00:04:57.279 --> 00:04:58.839
not added, but next to it.

105
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:01.399
He's my Morgan Freeman anyway, somebody.

106
00:05:01.240 --> 00:05:04.600
There, you go, Yeah, I can't get him things like poster.

107
00:05:04.759 --> 00:05:06.319
He gets me things nice.

108
00:05:06.839 --> 00:05:08.519
One of my favorite movies, and a lot of people

109
00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:10.920
don't know Stephen King because it's not like a horror.

110
00:05:10.759 --> 00:05:12.639
Movie, right, but it just was his genius.

111
00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:13.879
Right. Oh yeah, it's so good.

112
00:05:13.959 --> 00:05:15.959
Yeah, epic movie. It's funny.

113
00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.920
I do all the festivals all the time, and my

114
00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:21.920
youngest stores, she'll call me up, so you're excited about

115
00:05:21.959 --> 00:05:24.759
this festival. I'm like, I love it. I don't know

116
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:26.480
if excited is the right word when you do it

117
00:05:26.519 --> 00:05:28.920
every week. But then when I came here for the

118
00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:31.439
first time, I called her up and I'm like, I'm

119
00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:32.759
calling you from the prison.

120
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.319
Yard of Shawshank. Now I'm excited.

121
00:05:35.879 --> 00:05:39.000
Yeah, absolutely right. It gives it that juice.

122
00:05:39.319 --> 00:05:41.519
Yeah, exactly, Yeah, totally.

123
00:05:42.519 --> 00:05:44.480
So what do you guys got going on after this

124
00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:46.920
that we want the listeners to know about? What do

125
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:49.240
we have next for going on after inc that? We

126
00:05:49.279 --> 00:05:51.199
want the listeners know about and tell them about your

127
00:05:51.240 --> 00:05:53.920
merch store because your merch store is badass and they

128
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:56.079
can't listen to my show. And let's say buy your merch.

129
00:05:56.399 --> 00:05:58.040
Okay, our merch store.

130
00:05:58.120 --> 00:06:00.120
It's if you go to our Instagram page, there's a

131
00:06:00.199 --> 00:06:03.040
link to our merch store. But thank you for plugging that.

132
00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:07.959
We're next week. It's what's today, July sixteen, I don't know.

133
00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:10.959
We're playing Denver next Saturday, and then after that in

134
00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.480
August we're headed to Australia for two weeks.

135
00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:16.040
And I've never been to Australia period. Wow.

136
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:18.720
I'm really excited for that. To go with these guys

137
00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:22.800
and keep doing this and enjoying the moment, that's what

138
00:06:22.839 --> 00:06:23.360
we're doing.

139
00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:24.439
That's the key.

140
00:06:24.519 --> 00:06:26.800
Yeah, those are our plans. So next is Denver and

141
00:06:26.839 --> 00:06:29.199
then two weeks in Australia.

142
00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:32.759
Fucking Australia. We're going west to East Coast I know.

143
00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:33.519
I love it.

144
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:37.600
Man, Australia, that's pretty freaking cool. Have you been to

145
00:06:37.639 --> 00:06:38.639
Australia before?

146
00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:40.680
Yeah, yeah, I've been a bunch of times.

147
00:06:40.800 --> 00:06:43.360
And I'm actually doing that in August with Dillinger and

148
00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:46.759
then going back in November with Suicidal on Metallica tour.

149
00:06:47.240 --> 00:06:49.160
I'm gonna be in Australia quite a bit. Man, I'm

150
00:06:49.160 --> 00:06:51.079
gonna get those damn those play points.

151
00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:51.959
Man, there you go.

152
00:06:52.079 --> 00:06:55.720
Shit, what going to Australia? Right? Yeah?

153
00:06:55.720 --> 00:06:57.279
A little band call maybe you heard of them? No,

154
00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:59.240
but yeah, I'm not looking forward to it, but I

155
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:03.319
am lying. It's a long, exhausting but it's so good,

156
00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:04.519
so exhausting.

157
00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:06.240
But oh what are you doing down there? See this

158
00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:07.360
is now he's going down.

159
00:07:07.160 --> 00:07:09.759
There speaking of looking for something.

160
00:07:11.199 --> 00:07:15.079
Check out my battle vest from what I was talking about.

161
00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:17.319
Yep, shit, it's up.

162
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:18.120
You know what's up?

163
00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:21.680
Look at that's sick. Now, this is a real fucking vest.

164
00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:22.319
How old is this?

165
00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:24.079
Nineteen eighty?

166
00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:26.920
Hell yeah, So if you were the guy that we

167
00:07:27.079 --> 00:07:29.360
looked up to in the eighties, we're like that dude

168
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:33.240
was a fucking badass. Well, thank like my my my

169
00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:36.360
neighbor growing up in New Jersey, I'm from.

170
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:41.439
New Jersey, originally originally North Jersey, Montclair litl Falls, Roselantic,

171
00:07:41.839 --> 00:07:44.360
but I the last place was down to the shore.

172
00:07:44.360 --> 00:07:45.800
I've lived all over Jersey.

173
00:07:46.040 --> 00:07:48.480
Yeah, up in Morris County.

174
00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:49.839
Okay, so I know it well.

175
00:07:50.279 --> 00:07:52.680
But I spent a lot of time in Montclair. There

176
00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:53.000
you go.

177
00:07:53.439 --> 00:07:56.000
My neighbor across the street to me growing up, drew

178
00:07:56.040 --> 00:07:58.160
with this like if you see movies today, like the

179
00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:01.480
typical metal van with like the lightning on it, and

180
00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:04.959
he always had the sickest eighties metal shirts. That was

181
00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:09.519
my window to like that guy's a fucking badass. Nineteen

182
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:12.480
eighty four, Van Halen's eight nineteen eighty four came out

183
00:08:12.519 --> 00:08:13.920
and that was it for me.

184
00:08:14.120 --> 00:08:17.399
So check out what happened to me. I'm like twelve

185
00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:20.920
years old. It's nineteen eighty and my dad goes, pack

186
00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:24.959
your bags, we're moving to California. And that was the

187
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.319
start of my metal journey because I went there. My

188
00:08:29.480 --> 00:08:33.440
first club show was at the Roxy Motley Crue before

189
00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:35.759
they had an album, when they were like horror punk,

190
00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:39.279
they weren't lamb yet. And then I went to Slayers

191
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:41.840
first show ever, Metallica's first show ever.

192
00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:46.080
That is crazy bro right, you're that's crazy.

193
00:08:46.279 --> 00:08:47.080
I mean, like, like.

194
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:49.519
You've seen history. Man, you just seen the.

195
00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:53.639
Very bigate I saw Auzsie went Randy Rhodes, Like that

196
00:08:53.799 --> 00:08:54.440
was epic.

197
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:56.879
It amazes me now.

198
00:08:56.720 --> 00:09:00.600
When we're at this festival with so many metal heads

199
00:09:00.600 --> 00:09:03.440
out there, especially where people are like metals dead.

200
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:04.120
Rock's dead.

201
00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:07.159
Walk the fuck out there and you'll see how not

202
00:09:07.320 --> 00:09:09.879
dead it is and thank god, it's bigger than it

203
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:12.559
ever was and we're one big family now.

204
00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:14.279
Yeah.

205
00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:17.440
And what's pretty wild is you witness the evolution of

206
00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:18.440
metal pretty much.

207
00:09:18.679 --> 00:09:20.360
Yeah, totally wild.

208
00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:23.120
Like we hopped in a little before the middle of it,

209
00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:28.120
like early mid eighties for me, mid eighties more. But

210
00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:33.279
it's man, I must be sick, just like late seventies,

211
00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:34.480
early eighties.

212
00:09:34.919 --> 00:09:37.720
Oh dude, it was insane. Like I go now to

213
00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:40.240
LA I'm like, I'm going to Rainbow. I'm like, how

214
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:44.720
did I ever get in there? Like being twelve, thirteen, fourteen,

215
00:09:45.159 --> 00:09:49.080
Oh I walked in with Botley Crue that's how you know,

216
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:53.320
and hanging with Lemmy at the Rainbow shit shit like that.

217
00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:57.799
And I say to people that tell me nowadays like

218
00:09:57.879 --> 00:10:00.679
in my age group, oh yeah, I used to listen

219
00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:04.480
to metal. I'm like, no, you didn't if you used

220
00:10:04.519 --> 00:10:06.720
to listen to metal, you're not a metal head, Like

221
00:10:06.919 --> 00:10:12.720
it's a lifelong identity and just a passion, Like, yeah.

222
00:10:12.600 --> 00:10:14.840
It is on our music. You can't fake you know.

223
00:10:14.919 --> 00:10:16.279
It's not about a.

224
00:10:16.200 --> 00:10:19.080
Playlist like or like just a hit or the producer.

225
00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:23.120
It's about the band, what they mean and what they

226
00:10:23.159 --> 00:10:25.320
bring to the past, what they bring into the future,

227
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:26.399
all of that.

228
00:10:26.600 --> 00:10:28.519
Well, I am definitely so excited.

229
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:31.879
You guys are here at incarceration and I hope you

230
00:10:31.919 --> 00:10:35.679
don't get your artists past pulled because I would saying

231
00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:39.039
before it was louder than life. I think years ago

232
00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:44.159
Joy's Wolf Nick climbed up to very top. Nick from

233
00:10:44.279 --> 00:10:47.200
Joyous Wealth climbed up to very top, it was saying

234
00:10:47.279 --> 00:10:49.480
from up there, and as soon as their set was over,

235
00:10:50.360 --> 00:10:54.519
he got his past pulled and kicked out of the venue. Yeah,

236
00:10:54.559 --> 00:10:56.840
so let's hope that doesn't happen you. But I don't

237
00:10:56.840 --> 00:10:59.120
think it will because he got away with it at Rockville.

238
00:10:59.200 --> 00:11:02.639
So you might hear so that that was no subtle

239
00:11:02.720 --> 00:11:03.720
pressure at all from you.

240
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:08.919
It just means, yeah, well I'll give you the pressure.

241
00:11:09.559 --> 00:11:13.080
I just talked to Slaughter to prevail. They have said

242
00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:16.480
that they're gonna have the biggest wall of death ever here.

243
00:11:17.080 --> 00:11:18.720
I want to see you beat theirs.

244
00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:20.879
Oh boy, we go on right before them, so.

245
00:11:21.080 --> 00:11:23.799
Yeah, so now you have to like totally bring it

246
00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:24.200
all out.

247
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:29.080
The impressive crowd, the chair, a crowd stir upper band

248
00:11:29.159 --> 00:11:29.799
for sure.

249
00:11:29.960 --> 00:11:30.960
I'm excited to see them.

250
00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:32.919
I never say it, but yeah, it's gonna be fun.

251
00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:35.240
It's gonna be fun. It's all gonna be fun.

252
00:11:35.279 --> 00:11:37.759
Yeah, And anybody that plays after us, it's easier to

253
00:11:37.879 --> 00:11:39.600
enjoy watching because you're done playing.

254
00:11:39.879 --> 00:11:43.039
Exactly. See the pressure.

255
00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:47.720
Mine that we're bringing a bear out on stage. Brought

256
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:48.919
a bear with us.

257
00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:51.639
Oh boy, that's gonna be good. Does he have a

258
00:11:51.679 --> 00:11:52.399
bandana on?

259
00:11:53.320 --> 00:11:55.240
Yeah? Yeah, I know that bear.

260
00:11:55.360 --> 00:11:56.200
You met him before.

261
00:11:56.360 --> 00:11:59.960
Yeah, that's gonna be fun. Well, you guys rock any fun?

262
00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:02.159
I know words you want to give the listeners before

263
00:12:02.200 --> 00:12:02.679
we go.

264
00:12:03.480 --> 00:12:04.120
Final words.

265
00:12:04.120 --> 00:12:06.559
Thanks for having us tak them the time, talk.
