Y Radio and I'm here with.

6
00:00:27.280 --> 00:00:30.079
I'm whyaet Ellis And man.

7
00:00:30.359 --> 00:00:34.560
You are a superstar. I don't even know. Eleven years old,

8
00:00:34.679 --> 00:00:38.000
you write some songs and they end up debuting at

9
00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:40.280
number one? How does that happen?

10
00:00:40.399 --> 00:00:43.200
It's pretty special, it's pretty special, and I've been honored,

11
00:00:43.240 --> 00:00:46.240
and it's been just such a wild journey.

12
00:00:46.399 --> 00:00:49.719
I know, right, and you're thirteen and you're at what

13
00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:51.039
that at the Opry? Right?

14
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:51.640
Yes?

15
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:52.520
Oh yeah? God?

16
00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:57.240
Like are you like the youngest ever to be there?

17
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:59.439
I don't know about that, but it's such an honor

18
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:01.200
for me to get to play somewhere where all my

19
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:03.679
heroes had been and where they started?

20
00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:07.040
And how did this all start? What got you into this?

21
00:01:07.239 --> 00:01:09.959
I heard Rocky Top by the Ausburn Brothers and I

22
00:01:10.079 --> 00:01:13.319
just got hooked on it and heard Bill Monroe, the

23
00:01:13.319 --> 00:01:15.959
Stanley Brothers and everybody else and couldn't quit.

24
00:01:16.319 --> 00:01:19.319
Oh man, that's so cool and a eleven years old?

25
00:01:19.400 --> 00:01:20.879
How are you writing songs?

26
00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:21.040
Like?

27
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:24.879
Where did you even know how to write a song?

28
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:25.920
How did that happen.

29
00:01:26.439 --> 00:01:29.519
Well, I started with instrumentals because that's what came naturally

30
00:01:29.560 --> 00:01:29.760
to me.

31
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:31.400
Yeah, and it did come natural.

32
00:01:31.480 --> 00:01:34.000
Then soon after that I got into writing lyrics and

33
00:01:34.040 --> 00:01:35.959
it just was a natural progression.

34
00:01:36.480 --> 00:01:39.120
Very cool. And then, so when was the first time

35
00:01:39.159 --> 00:01:40.439
you picked up an instrument?

36
00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:43.000
The first time I ever played an instrument was I

37
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:46.400
started on piano at age six, But first time I

38
00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:48.719
ever really picked up a string instrument when I was ten,

39
00:01:49.359 --> 00:01:51.400
and I got serious with it in the mandolin.

40
00:01:51.959 --> 00:01:55.840
Nice. And what prompted the change from piano to a

41
00:01:55.879 --> 00:01:56.799
string instrument.

42
00:01:57.079 --> 00:01:59.319
Well, you know, I wasn't a super serious piano player.

43
00:01:59.319 --> 00:02:02.200
It was just like I know, blessings a kid, but

44
00:02:02.359 --> 00:02:04.760
I heard Rocky Top and I got hooked on it.

45
00:02:05.319 --> 00:02:09.120
Nice. And did you take lessons or did you just

46
00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:10.000
teach yourself?

47
00:02:10.599 --> 00:02:13.520
Both? I learned every way I could, just soaking it up.

48
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:15.800
What would you say, it is the best thing you

49
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.879
got out of taking lessons and the best thing I

50
00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:20.240
just doing it yourself.

51
00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:24.199
Oh, I mean, getting to guests so much great advice

52
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:28.680
for from so many great players was amazing. But when

53
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:31.159
you go in yourself and learn it, it forces you

54
00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:33.599
to use your ear a little more. So they both

55
00:02:33.800 --> 00:02:34.560
are amazing.

56
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:38.199
Yeah, that's cool. And here you are at Bourbon and Beyond.

57
00:02:39.479 --> 00:02:41.560
When you found out you were going to be doing

58
00:02:41.599 --> 00:02:44.039
this gig, what was your reaction.

59
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:46.759
I was pretty excited. It's a massive festival and it's

60
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:47.719
a fun time.

61
00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:50.120
And you've been having a fun time here. Oh yeah,

62
00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:51.400
how was it at your set?

63
00:02:51.759 --> 00:02:55.080
It was great. It is a great crowd because that

64
00:02:55.199 --> 00:02:56.000
did you Yeah.

65
00:02:56.080 --> 00:02:56.280
Yeah.

66
00:02:56.280 --> 00:02:58.840
There's always a few people out there that like some bluegrass.

67
00:02:58.960 --> 00:03:01.080
That's right. A lot of people like some blue guys

68
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:03.360
they do they do. It's like the I've always think

69
00:03:03.879 --> 00:03:08.759
that's the cool, chill thing to do out on your porch.

70
00:03:09.919 --> 00:03:12.919
But then at a festival team Like, right down the

71
00:03:12.919 --> 00:03:15.159
street from where I live, there's this park and every

72
00:03:15.159 --> 00:03:19.240
week they have live bluegrass in the park, and to me,

73
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:22.240
that's what I think of that. That's blue that's it,

74
00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:27.280
just like that community exactly one hundred. So how has

75
00:03:27.400 --> 00:03:30.960
Danny Wimmer and their team treated you as an artist

76
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.240
here at Bourbon and Beyond.

77
00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:35.759
Oh, the hospitality's been amazing. It's one of the best

78
00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:36.319
I've been to.

79
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.639
Nice and your mom over here, what does she think

80
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:42.960
about all this whirlwind of what's going on?

81
00:03:43.919 --> 00:03:47.039
It's a whirlwind. She's very supportive and it's a good time.

82
00:03:48.039 --> 00:03:51.879
If you didn't have music, now, what's your passion? What

83
00:03:51.919 --> 00:03:55.120
would you do if you didn't have music, I'd be outside.

84
00:03:55.199 --> 00:03:57.360
I'd probably be a fishing guide or something.

85
00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:02.639
Do you fish now? Oh yeah, okay, what's your best

86
00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:03.599
fishing story?

87
00:04:04.520 --> 00:04:08.840
Best fishing story. That's a good question, that's a really

88
00:04:08.840 --> 00:04:12.039
good question. I would say the time that I was

89
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:15.599
fishing and I stepped in a fire ant hill ool

90
00:04:15.719 --> 00:04:17.839
and I threw my rod on the ground and then

91
00:04:17.879 --> 00:04:20.240
picked it up and reeled in the biggest fish I

92
00:04:20.279 --> 00:04:20.839
ever caught.

93
00:04:21.240 --> 00:04:21.639
Really.

94
00:04:22.160 --> 00:04:25.759
Yeah, wow, that's pretty cool because listen those red ants,

95
00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:29.759
yeah there mean oh yeah, man, I've had my experiences

96
00:04:29.800 --> 00:04:32.639
with them, So you're pretty cool that you were able

97
00:04:32.680 --> 00:04:34.680
to catch a fish after that.

98
00:04:35.800 --> 00:04:36.319
Yeah.

99
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:38.680
I just kind of waited in the pond a little

100
00:04:38.680 --> 00:04:40.680
ways to get them off me. But other than that,

101
00:04:40.759 --> 00:04:41.720
it went pretty smooth.

102
00:04:41.959 --> 00:04:44.279
See you are a true bluegrass boy, aren't you.

103
00:04:44.439 --> 00:04:44.560
Oh?

104
00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:49.920
Yeah, there it is. So what other things do you

105
00:04:50.040 --> 00:04:53.240
dream of in the near future in this industry? Is

106
00:04:53.279 --> 00:04:56.800
there somebody you want to tour with? Is there something

107
00:04:56.920 --> 00:04:58.000
you really want to do?

108
00:04:58.040 --> 00:04:59.639
Because you were ready a common you know, I'm just

109
00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:01.639
a long for the ride at this point, and I'm

110
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:04.600
happy to do anything that I can and just happy

111
00:05:04.639 --> 00:05:05.879
to be out here making music.

112
00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:08.839
See. I love hearing that, because sometimes that's not the

113
00:05:08.920 --> 00:05:12.199
case a lot of times too, even with kids your age,

114
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:15.839
like not necessarily the case, because they see how much

115
00:05:15.879 --> 00:05:19.560
work there is involved and that becomes not fun anymore.

116
00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:22.160
So what do you do in your mind that keeps

117
00:05:22.199 --> 00:05:23.399
it fun all the time?

118
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:25.399
You don't really have to try when you love it

119
00:05:25.480 --> 00:05:28.319
like I do, and have great band members around you

120
00:05:28.360 --> 00:05:29.519
that have the same passion.

121
00:05:29.879 --> 00:05:33.360
That's right now. So the band members that you have,

122
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:35.720
how did you pick them?

123
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:38.639
We just kind of gravitated towards each other there. I

124
00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:40.959
think they're the best of the best. And this music,

125
00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:43.319
I said, it's like a community and we just kind

126
00:05:43.319 --> 00:05:44.800
of fell together.

127
00:05:45.720 --> 00:05:49.240
And how do you find like the old school bluegrass

128
00:05:49.279 --> 00:05:52.360
people accepting you into that community.

129
00:05:52.519 --> 00:05:56.000
It's just that's where I started, and in a bluegrass community,

130
00:05:56.079 --> 00:05:58.920
like it all starts with the roots, yeah, and it

131
00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:01.560
goes from there. And I think that's just the way

132
00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:05.839
it is. It's always been that way, super connected, super open.

133
00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:10.360
I love it. And who do you really want to

134
00:06:10.399 --> 00:06:13.199
see here? At Bourbon beyond.

135
00:06:14.199 --> 00:06:16.560
I'd love to get to see everybody, but we're actually

136
00:06:16.639 --> 00:06:18.560
having to head out in just a couple of minutes

137
00:06:18.839 --> 00:06:20.839
because I'm playing in Arizona tomorrow.

138
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:21.680
Wow.

139
00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:25.040
Yes, that's some road trip for it is?

140
00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:27.639
Yes, Well, how you feel being on the road like

141
00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:29.399
that and traveling all over.

142
00:06:29.639 --> 00:06:31.160
It's a lot of fun and you get to see

143
00:06:31.160 --> 00:06:32.319
a lot of new places.

144
00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:34.800
See. I love that because, like sometimes I bring my

145
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:38.160
youngest daughter to festivals with me and she's like after

146
00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:40.399
one day, she's like, Dad, I'll know how you do

147
00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:43.519
this every weekend because I'm done already. It takes a

148
00:06:43.560 --> 00:06:44.759
special person.

149
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:47.399
Right it does. Yeah, Yeah, you really gotta love it. Yeah,

150
00:06:47.399 --> 00:06:49.120
you gotta love it, and you gotta look at it

151
00:06:49.160 --> 00:06:49.759
the right way.

152
00:06:50.519 --> 00:06:53.600
See that's what I'm talking about right there. You definitely

153
00:06:53.600 --> 00:06:55.079
have to look at it the right way, and it

154

It's number one on the Bluegrass Charts today.

185
00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:14.600
It's wild. And then Michael Cleveland I interviewed him earlier.

186
00:08:14.920 --> 00:08:18.000
He's like one of the best fiddle players in the world.

187
00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:19.040
How did that happen.

188
00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:20.800
