We are at Shawshank Prison aka Ohio State Reformatory for the 2025 Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival. Convictions is playing and came backstage in the Press / Artist Lounge to talk with Pipeman Radio of W4CY Radio about what it is like to perform at such an iconic location where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. This closed down prison is known to be haunted so when you go to Blood Prison who knows what will happen.

Hi, you have done too, Yes, that's true.

2
00:00:08.759 --> 00:00:19.039
Wow, crazy Young Incarceration America's rock, metal and tattoo festival.

3
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:22.079
This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe

4
00:00:22.120 --> 00:00:24.399
Man W four c Y Radio, and I'm here.

5
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:26.199
With Michael from Convictions.

6
00:00:26.679 --> 00:00:30.320
Nice here at Incarceration. Is your family mad at you

7
00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:31.440
for going to prison?

8
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:33.799
No, they're all here nice.

9
00:00:33.960 --> 00:00:36.119
Yeah, so they're all in prison with you or day

10
00:00:36.200 --> 00:00:36.960
here visiting you.

11
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:40.320
No prisoners in my family, but they're all here nice.

12
00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:45.880
Seriously though, how wild is it to perform at sewn

13
00:00:45.960 --> 00:00:46.640
Shank Prison?

14
00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:47.399
Unral.

15
00:00:47.640 --> 00:00:49.960
I've actually gotten to do the tour here as a

16
00:00:50.039 --> 00:00:53.359
tourist a few times. I've gone twice now, so this

17
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:56.240
is my first Incarceration appearance and we're playing so.

18
00:00:56.399 --> 00:00:59.600
This is like a whole new experience as way cool.

19
00:01:00.759 --> 00:01:02.759
It's like one of my favorite festivals. I do a

20
00:01:02.840 --> 00:01:05.920
whole load of them, but this one's just I love

21
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:08.040
the movie, so it just hits difference.

22
00:01:07.719 --> 00:01:09.959
Like yeah, Andy duframe, Oh yeah, the.

23
00:01:10.040 --> 00:01:12.200
First time I did this, Like my youngest store she's

24
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:15.040
always like, so you excited to do this festival? And

25
00:01:15.079 --> 00:01:17.799
I mean this one's just in general, I'm like, well,

26
00:01:17.840 --> 00:01:18.239
I love it.

27
00:01:18.439 --> 00:01:18.920
It's great.

28
00:01:19.079 --> 00:01:20.599
I don't know if exciting is the word when you

29
00:01:20.680 --> 00:01:22.239
do it every week. And then when I did this

30
00:01:22.359 --> 00:01:24.120
one for the first time, I called her up. I'm like,

31
00:01:25.159 --> 00:01:28.599
I'm calling you from the prison yard of Shawshank. Now

32
00:01:28.680 --> 00:01:29.480
I'm excited.

33
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:31.359
Yeah, it's unreal, right.

34
00:01:31.599 --> 00:01:35.280
Yeah, So have you done other Danny Wimmer festivals? Yeah?

35
00:01:35.359 --> 00:01:37.599
We were lucky enough to do Aftershock last year.

36
00:01:37.799 --> 00:01:39.400
Oh I think I saw you at that one.

37
00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:42.280
Okay, yeah, yeah, that was the first Danny Wimmer.

38
00:01:42.280 --> 00:01:43.799
Presents appearance for us.

39
00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:46.400
And then since then I've gotten to go to Sonic

40
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:48.680
Temple and Welcome to Rockville.

41
00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:49.280
Nice.

42
00:01:49.359 --> 00:01:52.799
So it's yeah, we're doing the whole Danny Wimmer tourism

43
00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:55.439
slash performing trip. I know.

44
00:01:55.599 --> 00:01:58.400
Now you guys just play every Danny Wimmer festival.

45
00:01:58.480 --> 00:01:59.359
Yeah, oh yeah, we want it.

46
00:02:00.599 --> 00:02:03.519
So I'm gonna ask you. I ask every artist, how

47
00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:06.000
does Danny Wimmer treat you as an artist?

48
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:07.599
Next level?

49
00:02:08.120 --> 00:02:11.599
They have everything covered as far as the accommodations to

50
00:02:11.879 --> 00:02:13.479
the staff, top tier.

51
00:02:13.719 --> 00:02:14.960
This is like the gold standard.

52
00:02:15.560 --> 00:02:17.400
And that's why I asked that question because I love

53
00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:20.439
that I've been doing this festivals for fifteen years and

54
00:02:20.520 --> 00:02:22.919
I have yet to find an artist to say even

55
00:02:23.159 --> 00:02:24.639
one negative thing about it.

56
00:02:25.479 --> 00:02:27.560
Only negative thing I could think of is we want more.

57
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:31.759
Exactly exactly, and he treats every artist the same. That's

58
00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:33.879
why I keep hearing it's like, yeah, it doesn't matter

59
00:02:33.919 --> 00:02:36.719
if you're first on the list or headline, you get

60
00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:39.759
the same AP plus treatment.

61
00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:41.039
One hundred percent. Yeah, it's incredible.

62
00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:45.280
So what was that first moment in your life that

63
00:02:45.400 --> 00:02:47.800
you decided this is what you want to do.

64
00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:51.800
Well, I've been doing it for twenty years, So I

65
00:02:51.879 --> 00:02:54.560
started when I was a fifteen year old, right, which

66
00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:56.479
is it's kind of cool you're asking me that because

67
00:02:56.520 --> 00:02:59.120
I I remember playing my first show two thousand and

68
00:02:59.159 --> 00:03:02.400
five my parents, and then here we are twenty years

69
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:04.759
later in front of my parents doing it all over again.

70
00:03:04.879 --> 00:03:07.520
So I think for me it's it's just really empowering,

71
00:03:07.800 --> 00:03:08.840
and you.

72
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:12.000
Know, being bullied or feeling like an outsider, being interested

73
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.560
in alternative culture, being able to play music that's this powerful.

74
00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:18.439
There's nothing that can compare to it, really, And what

75
00:03:18.599 --> 00:03:18.840
you have.

76
00:03:18.919 --> 00:03:23.080
To say to people that might say rock music, metal

77
00:03:23.240 --> 00:03:26.000
music can't be Christian.

78
00:03:26.439 --> 00:03:29.599
Well, if you read the Bible, it's pretty metal, right,

79
00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:30.879
A lot of good content in there.

80
00:03:31.240 --> 00:03:34.159
No, I mean I can't judge people for you know,

81
00:03:34.199 --> 00:03:35.319
how they view music.

82
00:03:35.439 --> 00:03:38.280
But I think what's important for us is being inclusive

83
00:03:38.479 --> 00:03:40.199
and open minded and respectful.

84
00:03:40.840 --> 00:03:43.400
And I feel like being transparent and open with.

85
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:45.680
Our faith and our message has brought us a lot

86
00:03:45.719 --> 00:03:47.840
of new listeners and widen our audience.

87
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:49.479
So that's the best thing we can hope for.

88
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:52.639
And me myself, if I think about it, I think

89
00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:57.000
what better way to bring kids to God? But this

90
00:03:57.240 --> 00:03:59.759
type of music opposed to ones that they wouldn't be

91
00:03:59.800 --> 00:04:00.520
in interested in.

92
00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:05.080
I agree, Yeah, I think Christianity is like the top counterculture.

93
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:08.560
Right and you know, lock, why not send that message

94
00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:13.280
out like, yes, you can rock out here and enjoy yourself,

95
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:15.759
but get a positive message at the same time.

96
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:17.519
Yeah. Absolutely, that's important to us.

97
00:04:17.800 --> 00:04:20.360
So where do you think that influence came to you

98
00:04:21.399 --> 00:04:26.800
to do like Christian metalcore or however you would want

99
00:04:26.839 --> 00:04:28.639
to call it. That's what they call you. I don't

100
00:04:28.639 --> 00:04:30.600
know if that's how us and artists call you, but

101
00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:34.879
what influences in your life went in that direction?

102
00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:36.959
It's a great question. Talk to you all day about that.

103
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:41.240
I've been Christian since twenty nineteen. I was doing secular

104
00:04:41.319 --> 00:04:44.879
music long before that. For me with my faith. It's

105
00:04:45.279 --> 00:04:48.439
the lens that I see the world through, so it's

106
00:04:48.480 --> 00:04:51.680
going to naturally show up in the music regardless. So

107
00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:53.600
when I was approached by Convictions and they said, hey,

108
00:04:53.639 --> 00:04:56.079
would you like to show this Christian band, Initially I

109
00:04:56.160 --> 00:04:58.319
was really excited. I'm like, oh, like talking to my dad, like, Dad,

110
00:04:58.360 --> 00:05:00.319
I'm gonna be in a Christian band, And he was

111
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:02.639
actually like pretty against it because he was like, well,

112
00:05:02.639 --> 00:05:04.160
if you're gonna do it, you need to like full

113
00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:08.079
send it. So for me, it's important to be transparent.

114
00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:10.040
I think this is the way I see the world

115
00:05:10.360 --> 00:05:12.839
and I want to share that with my art. So

116
00:05:13.279 --> 00:05:16.519
I honestly think it's the counterculture. Like I mentioned, I

117
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:20.240
was hard into skateboarding turn of music growing up, and

118
00:05:20.839 --> 00:05:22.319
it was just kind of a funny moment when I

119
00:05:23.399 --> 00:05:26.480
was like a teenager I was thinking about Christian metal.

120
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:29.800
There were so many good bands back then, man long

121
00:05:29.879 --> 00:05:32.600
lists of cool Christian metal core bands, but it was

122
00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:35.120
like the most counterculture thing I could do, right, you

123
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:36.800
know what I mean. It's easy to be negative and

124
00:05:36.839 --> 00:05:39.360
say bad words or talk about dark subjects, which we

125
00:05:39.480 --> 00:05:42.040
still do in some ways, but it was just kind

126
00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:44.839
of like taking that counterculture to the next level.

127
00:05:45.240 --> 00:05:48.519
I love AARNet because people like you. I think I

128
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:52.720
have more of an influence on kids than any other

129
00:05:52.959 --> 00:05:56.839
type of industry, like a music artist, and so what

130
00:05:57.240 --> 00:06:03.120
greater place to spread that pause empowering message to bring

131
00:06:03.319 --> 00:06:07.839
more people closer to the good side A posted dark side?

132
00:06:07.959 --> 00:06:10.199
Love that? Yeah, I love that. I agree.

133
00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:12.600
Yeah, I think it's important just to be authentic. I

134
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:14.639
think that's what people are looking for. Yeah, you know,

135
00:06:14.680 --> 00:06:16.560
whether they agree with our message or not, I feel

136
00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:18.439
like people are looking for something real and this is

137
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:20.600
what as reel as it gets. This is my real

138
00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:23.639
life experience and spiritual experience, and I want to share that.

139
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:24.040
With the art.

140
00:06:24.519 --> 00:06:26.480
And I think that it's a true art. It's a

141
00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:30.720
true artist shares what's it within them without worrying about

142
00:06:30.920 --> 00:06:35.680
the listeners or anybody else, and then people gravitate towards

143
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:37.439
it because you're being authentic.

144
00:06:38.279 --> 00:06:39.800
Yeah, I think that's what people are looking for.

145
00:06:40.279 --> 00:06:43.000
Yeah, so much, you know, like any media, movies and

146
00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:46.439
songs or whatever. You know, I think people are they

147
00:06:46.519 --> 00:06:48.759
get that fatigue when they know something's just getting pumped

148
00:06:48.759 --> 00:06:51.319
out or it's a trend or whatever. We're very aware

149
00:06:51.360 --> 00:06:53.120
there's not a lot of Christian metal bands out there,

150
00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:55.000
but we're still gonna do it because that's who we

151
00:06:55.079 --> 00:06:58.040
are and I feel like there's an audience for that,

152
00:06:58.439 --> 00:07:00.600
and that doesn't mean you have to be to be

153
00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:01.519
interested in what we're doing.

154
00:07:01.600 --> 00:07:03.199
We talk about real life issues too.

155
00:07:03.480 --> 00:07:05.800
Well the way I look at like, I'm a Jew

156
00:07:06.240 --> 00:07:11.079
and a Christian band. To me, it's still empowering. It's

157
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:14.680
still great music, and it's still a positive message and

158
00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:16.160
to me, that's all that matters.

159
00:07:16.600 --> 00:07:18.199
Yeah, that's awesome to hear, and I love that you

160
00:07:18.279 --> 00:07:20.879
shared that. I think for us too, it's finding those

161
00:07:20.920 --> 00:07:24.120
topics that a secular audience can still connect with when

162
00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:27.519
it comes like mental health or trials and tribulations throughout life.

163
00:07:27.800 --> 00:07:30.160
We're just talking about real things and that's actually the

164
00:07:30.279 --> 00:07:31.000
root of our band name.

165
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:32.839
So well, there you go. Go.

166
00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:35.720
What do you have going on the rest of the

167
00:07:35.879 --> 00:07:38.279
year that you want to tell people about that they

168
00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:39.879
should look out for sure?

169
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:41.720
Well, we're working on a lot of new music, so

170
00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:43.879
we're hoping to have a new record ready before next

171
00:07:43.959 --> 00:07:46.639
year or early next year, I can't quite say yet.

172
00:07:47.079 --> 00:07:49.680
We're hitting the road this fall with demon Hunter, which

173
00:07:49.759 --> 00:07:50.279
is really exciting.

174
00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:53.680
We're looking forward to to pull us tour and then yah,

175
00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:54.759
keeping our schedule busy.

176
00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:57.600
Hopefully we can pick up some more Danny Wimmer festivals.

177
00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:00.600
And putting that out there right now so he can

178
00:08:00.680 --> 00:08:03.480
hear this can put you on all the Danny Wimber festivals.

179
00:08:03.560 --> 00:08:04.800
Let's do it. Let's do it.

180
00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:06.360
You gotta be on all of them.

181
00:08:06.439 --> 00:08:07.639
Let's go already.

182
00:08:08.360 --> 00:08:12.240
So one story good or bad in your whole musical journey,

183
00:08:12.319 --> 00:08:14.319
since you're fifteen, what would it be?

184
00:08:14.759 --> 00:08:17.639
I can't quite give it to one moment because there's

185
00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:19.439
a lot. I mean, we were trying to be a

186
00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:21.480
little quiet about this, but I'll just come out and

187
00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:23.240
tell you we were hit by a drunk driver just

188
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:25.480
a couple of days ago, and you know, it's quite

189
00:08:25.480 --> 00:08:25.879
an event.

190
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:29.120
We're all okay, So I don't want to do if

191
00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:30.959
you're mongering or anything like that. We're all good.

192
00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:34.360
Everything's gonna get taken care of. But what's tough about

193
00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:36.600
that is you go through a lot of that. There's

194
00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:40.559
a lot of flat tires, accidents.

195
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:42.120
You name it. There's gonna be problems.

196
00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:46.200
And it's tough because you see, you see your favorite

197
00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:48.679
artists and it's like they're always on cloud nine. There's

198
00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:51.440
always something awesome, a cool interview you're doing right now,

199
00:08:51.559 --> 00:08:53.879
you know, like it's kind of like all you see,

200
00:08:54.200 --> 00:08:56.759
so it's tough. Like there's a lot of moments that

201
00:08:56.879 --> 00:08:59.279
really bring you down or make you a question. And

202
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:01.480
I think that's an important because it'll really build your

203
00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:04.440
character and kind of thicken your skin a little bit. Yeah,

204
00:09:04.440 --> 00:09:07.600
which is kind of silly because we got into a

205
00:09:08.200 --> 00:09:10.120
you know, we got into that fender bender. I was

206
00:09:10.360 --> 00:09:13.279
hyperventil I didn't have an anxiety crying Like. It was

207
00:09:13.320 --> 00:09:18.559
brutal for me, man and emotionally brutal. And you know,

208
00:09:18.679 --> 00:09:21.559
my guys are like just jumped right into action, you know,

209
00:09:22.080 --> 00:09:26.120
calling the police, calling the tow trucks, getting insurance figured

210
00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:28.600
out all that, Just jumping into action, having that resilience.

211
00:09:29.159 --> 00:09:30.639
I feel like a lot of people don't really get

212
00:09:30.679 --> 00:09:31.879
to see that side of what we're doing.

213
00:09:32.279 --> 00:09:35.720
Yeah, and yeah, I would really for an advice for

214
00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:37.519
a new artist, it's just kind of be okay with

215
00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:39.879
the lows and be excited for the highs.

216
00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:40.639
See.

217
00:09:40.679 --> 00:09:44.159
I love that that's what your answer was because it

218
00:09:44.279 --> 00:09:46.360
made me think while you're saying that, I've said it

219
00:09:46.519 --> 00:09:51.159
earlier too. People nowadays a look at social media and stuff,

220
00:09:51.559 --> 00:09:53.559
and like I get it too because I go and

221
00:09:53.639 --> 00:09:55.919
do all these vessels and are like people are like, oh,

222
00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:59.320
you're living the dream life, and that is partially true,

223
00:09:59.720 --> 00:10:06.720
but nobody, no band, no media person shows the stuff

224
00:10:06.840 --> 00:10:09.879
you have to go through in the trials and tribulations

225
00:10:10.120 --> 00:10:15.200
and the negative aspects that lead you to that dream life.

226
00:10:15.639 --> 00:10:18.679
And even while you're having a dream life, you have

227
00:10:18.919 --> 00:10:20.000
all those things too.

228
00:10:20.440 --> 00:10:22.240
Yeah. Yeah, especially for artists.

229
00:10:22.600 --> 00:10:24.600
Yeah yeah, there's a lot of highs, a lot of lows,

230
00:10:24.600 --> 00:10:25.080
and you just got.

231
00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:26.840
To keep moving. Yeah, no doubt about it.

232
00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:29.200
And I like when artists like you are real so

233
00:10:29.320 --> 00:10:32.279
people can see like you're just a normal person. It

234
00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:35.519
goes through the same thing they're all going through, you know.

235
00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:39.559
And it's not just it's a lot hard work too,

236
00:10:40.039 --> 00:10:46.840
you know what you do. It's complete dedication, conviction and

237
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:49.159
hard hard work.

238
00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:52.120
Absolutely. Yeah. Amen to that.

239
00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:55.799
Amen. So anything else you want to tell the listeners

240
00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:57.559
about that we haven't covered already.

241
00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:01.919
Oh sure, Well, like I said, convictions, we're working on

242
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:04.519
new material. We're saying busy this year, we're getting ready

243
00:11:04.559 --> 00:11:06.080
to hit the road with Demon Hunter, working on a

244
00:11:06.159 --> 00:11:08.960
new album. Appreciate you taking the time to listen and

245
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:09.480
talk to us.

246
00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:13.159
OH, I appreciate you being here at incarceration and thanks

247
00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:14.720
for being on the Adventures of pipe Man.

248
00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:19.960
OH pleasures mine. Thank you for listening to the Adventures

249
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.799
of Pipe Man on w for CUI Radio
