PipemanRadio Interviews Surya at Bloodstock Open Air 2025.

The Pipeman Radio tour landed at The UK’s biggest independent metal festival featuring not only some of the biggest bands in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, but also some of the best emerging metal music out of the UK and Europe competing in Metal 2 The Masses for a spot to play on New Blood Stage.  The festival also features The Sophie Lancaster Stage dedicated to the memory of Sophie being brutally beaten and murdered just for being Goth and different.  Sophie’s story particularly resonating with anyone who has been bullied, abused, or attacked for simply being who they are.  The mission of The Sophie Lancaster Foundation is to stamp out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere.  This festival is more than just great music, fun, awareness, and togetherness.  It's a family driven DIY Festival that cares where there ar eno outsiders. We join together for a common cause.

Next year is the 25th Anniversary.  Get your tickets now at https://www.bloodstock.uk.com/  #BOA26 6th - 9th August 2026, Catton Park, Derbyshire

1
00:00:04.360 --> 00:00:10.400
Hey you lunt, Yes, that's true.

2
00:00:08.759 --> 00:00:11.679
Wow, crae you.

3
00:00:15.960 --> 00:00:18.199
It's the pipe Man here on the Butts Pipe Man

4
00:00:18.280 --> 00:00:21.679
W four c Y Radio and I'm here with sorry

5
00:00:21.760 --> 00:00:25.960
nice here at Bloodstock. We are a little Birdie told

6
00:00:25.960 --> 00:00:28.920
me like you won some competition and ended up here.

7
00:00:29.480 --> 00:00:30.600
What's that all about?

8
00:00:31.480 --> 00:00:31.719
Yeah?

9
00:00:31.839 --> 00:00:33.600
The weird thing is we're from Leeds but we went

10
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:36.079
up to Burnley and won Melt to the Masses, So yeah,

11
00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:37.560
we had a bit of a trek to go and

12
00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:37.960
win it.

13
00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:38.679
So nice.

14
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:40.640
What made you go up to that one?

15
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:41.640
Well, we sat.

16
00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:43.640
I wanted to challenge ourselves a little bit, to be honest,

17
00:00:43.640 --> 00:00:45.719
because we did play before down in Leeds and stuff.

18
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:48.439
But we thought if we can get through with no

19
00:00:48.600 --> 00:00:49.240
fans up.

20
00:00:49.159 --> 00:00:51.719
There, like no one because he smiles away from us,

21
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:53.640
then I think we've done all right.

22
00:00:53.880 --> 00:00:56.320
So winning so it was a shocker.

23
00:00:56.399 --> 00:00:59.479
So yeah, wow, that's why here too. From a lot

24
00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:03.119
of bands that win, none of them expect to win. No,

25
00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:06.040
And I think that's a testament to you guys.

26
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:07.439
Being true artists.

27
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:13.319
Yeah, because true artists, they're the worst critics of themselves.

28
00:01:13.400 --> 00:01:14.760
Okay, no one.

29
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:16.439
A harsher critic than we are of our cells.

30
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:19.840
It's like even me, I get off an interview and

31
00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:22.760
I'm like, oh I sucked, and they're like, thanks a lot.

32
00:01:22.840 --> 00:01:29.719
That was really great. Yeah, And so what's it feel

33
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:31.359
like to be here at Bloodstock?

34
00:01:32.120 --> 00:01:35.560
Absolutely incredible. I honestly cannot even describe it. I don't

35
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:37.480
know whether it's making it better or worse that we're

36
00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:39.719
playing on the Sunday because the pressure is building up.

37
00:01:39.879 --> 00:01:42.640
The more bands we see, the more pressure there is.

38
00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:44.319
And the fact that there's only one of the band

39
00:01:44.359 --> 00:01:47.120
on when we're on, he's going to be honestly, it's

40
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:47.840
going to be incredible.

41
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:49.719
We're both excited and nervous.

42
00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:53.439
But yeah, well I'm sure you'll kill it. Yeah. Again,

43
00:01:54.480 --> 00:01:55.319
you're nervous too.

44
00:01:55.560 --> 00:01:57.599
You go up on stage and turn the mic on

45
00:01:57.719 --> 00:01:59.519
and then it's like you're in the zone.

46
00:01:59.719 --> 00:02:02.920
Soon is that first song goes down, We'll be fine it.

47
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:04.640
I do it too, we all do it.

48
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:08.719
It's like your switch is off until the mic goes on,

49
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:10.080
then the switch turns on.

50
00:02:10.280 --> 00:02:11.919
Yes, exactly, agreed.

51
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:16.439
So describe to our listeners how you would describe your music,

52
00:02:16.599 --> 00:02:20.520
not a genre, but as artists, how would you describe

53
00:02:20.520 --> 00:02:21.080
your music?

54
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:26.479
Atmospheric, heavy as all hell, didn't really want to go

55
00:02:26.520 --> 00:02:29.039
into genre, but it is sort of branded within death Care.

56
00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:32.080
So we're pretty heavy, and he's come round to the

57
00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:34.560
fact of I think he's pretty in at the moment,

58
00:02:34.599 --> 00:02:36.840
so I think we've London all right. But yeah, he's

59
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:43.840
very groove based. It's very bouncy. A lot of breakdowns energy, Yeah.

60
00:02:43.960 --> 00:02:45.080
Just a lot.

61
00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:48.639
And what was that one moment for all three of

62
00:02:48.680 --> 00:02:53.080
you that in your life you decide music is what

63
00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:53.719
you had to do.

64
00:02:55.479 --> 00:02:59.319
So the first instrument that I ever played was the saxophone,

65
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:03.080
and it was just through band at school, and I

66
00:03:03.120 --> 00:03:04.719
got to a point where I was like, oh, the

67
00:03:04.759 --> 00:03:08.360
saxophone's great, but I can't just solo and riff unless

68
00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:11.159
I'm like six years down the line. So I'm like,

69
00:03:11.400 --> 00:03:13.960
I just want to hit things. If I can hit

70
00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:17.800
things and make it sound kind of cool. Oh, look, drums,

71
00:03:18.439 --> 00:03:21.759
I can play the drums. And that's exactly what I did.

72
00:03:21.960 --> 00:03:25.400
And the harder it gets his metal. If he can

73
00:03:25.400 --> 00:03:27.240
play metal, I got the drums.

74
00:03:27.439 --> 00:03:28.960
So that was where it landed.

75
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:33.400
Nice for me as a vocalist. It was back in university.

76
00:03:33.479 --> 00:03:36.479
I was quite quiet, like all the way through school

77
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.800
and college and stuff like that, so I was like,

78
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:40.960
I started to come out of my shell. And then

79
00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:43.080
a couple of mates of mine were in bands and stuff,

80
00:03:43.080 --> 00:03:45.240
and I was like, that's pretty cool. Like, you know,

81
00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:47.479
look at him at the front of the stage, you know,

82
00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:49.800
shouting and balling, and you know.

83
00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:52.960
I was like, my timing's absolutely appalling. So I can't

84
00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:54.639
be a drummer, and I really want to be a drummer.

85
00:03:54.960 --> 00:03:56.520
So I was like, what can I do? Oh, I know,

86
00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:58.599
I'll just go a microphone and started shouting and just

87
00:03:58.680 --> 00:03:59.960
found out I was really good at it.

88
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:00.520
Nice.

89
00:04:00.599 --> 00:04:02.520
Oh yeah, that's where mine come from.

90
00:04:02.560 --> 00:04:06.400
So yeah, for me, it might sound a bit silly,

91
00:04:06.439 --> 00:04:09.599
but my cousin got a guitar and I was jealous

92
00:04:09.599 --> 00:04:11.879
of that, and I had to have a guitar myself,

93
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:14.199
and I didn't think I's sick of it, but I

94
00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:16.720
have done. And that was twenty years ago, and here

95
00:04:16.759 --> 00:04:19.759
I am, and I'm yeah, really really proud of that.

96
00:04:19.959 --> 00:04:23.000
I'll bet you your cousin doesn't even play guitaring.

97
00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:25.160
Oh no, he's just played the Sophie Lancaster.

98
00:04:25.240 --> 00:04:28.800
Stay, oh okay, waterlines? Yeah no, yeah, he has.

99
00:04:28.839 --> 00:04:33.480
Oh alright, start to your cousin about his interview with

100
00:04:33.639 --> 00:04:40.199
the pipe man because right, oh my god, you'll see. Okay, okay,

101
00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:44.199
all right, you know how he is, so yeah, no,

102
00:04:44.360 --> 00:04:47.560
how to interview probably when Yeah, my interviews are normally

103
00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:51.360
like ten minutes. At festival, it ended up thirty minutes. Yeah,

104
00:04:51.399 --> 00:04:52.199
I'm laughing.

105
00:04:52.279 --> 00:04:55.519
Yeah that's right.

106
00:04:55.639 --> 00:04:58.120
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but no that that was my answer.

107
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.360
And I'm really proud of them, and I'm really proud

108
00:05:00.360 --> 00:05:03.319
of where we are today, and I'm really really proud

109
00:05:03.319 --> 00:05:05.439
of the fact that we are here together as a family.

110
00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:08.120
And yeah, yeah, you guys gotta go on and call

111
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:09.360
it the Cousins Tour.

112
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:12.560
Oh yeah, I'm gonna be really proud of you when

113
00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:14.480
he keeps me awake driving him home tomorrow.

114
00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:19.800
So yeah, nice. So what else he got going on

115
00:05:19.959 --> 00:05:20.959
after Bloodstock?

116
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:23.560
So we have for Bolton towards the end of the month,

117
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:25.560
and then Birmingham, who's got like a two day going

118
00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:28.199
on at the Birmingham to a festival which we're headlining.

119
00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:30.959
And after that we're just going to be recording a

120
00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.199
new single towards the end of the year.

121
00:05:33.240 --> 00:05:36.519
There's well, so basically the Bolton gig, I believe is

122
00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:39.240
with making Blind I see, so that should be pretty

123
00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:43.600
good and in October. We are playing in leads with

124
00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:47.279
Raised by Owls on Halloween, which will be absolutely I mean,

125
00:05:47.319 --> 00:05:49.759
those lads are a good laugh at the best of times,

126
00:05:50.040 --> 00:05:51.519
so I can't wait to dress up with them and

127
00:05:51.560 --> 00:05:53.120
go on stage and to go absolutely mental.

128
00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:54.079
Oh that's great.

129
00:05:54.120 --> 00:05:56.079
So yeah, and we've got a couple of singles coming out,

130
00:05:56.240 --> 00:05:58.600
really like Getting Together, the last bit of our EP.

131
00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:01.439
That'll be the second Need, so we'll be forward to that.

132
00:06:01.480 --> 00:06:04.279
So that'll be coming out beginning of September, so only

133
00:06:04.360 --> 00:06:06.040
a couple of weeks after we've finished here.

134
00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:07.399
So yeah, very cool.

135
00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:11.399
And so how do people reach out to you on

136
00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:14.439
socials on the web to check out the new music,

137
00:06:14.600 --> 00:06:17.720
check out your tour dates, and most importantly by your

138
00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:19.519
merch because they can't listen to my show.

139
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:22.199
And listen your no worries, that's fine.

140
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:26.000
So we've got a link tree, says link Tree Sorrier Band.

141
00:06:26.360 --> 00:06:30.399
The same with our Instagram, so sorry, Underscore Band. Facebook,

142
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:32.079
everything's through there. I mean, we're on.

143
00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:34.399
TikTok, We're on We're literally like a plague. We're everywhere

144
00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:34.920
at the moment.

145
00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:35.639
I love it.

146
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:38.959
So anywhere you go, there's always a link to our merch.

147
00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:41.959
And we've obviously brought some today as well, so it'd

148
00:06:42.040 --> 00:06:42.439
be good.

149
00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:45.160
All the mergers through Big Cartel.

150
00:06:45.639 --> 00:06:50.519
So anything through that link tree you will find it nice.

151
00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:56.319
What's your most embarrassing TikTok? I, Well.

152
00:06:56.639 --> 00:06:58.879
It'll probably be something that we filmed this weekend a

153
00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:00.160
Bloods talk to be fair.

154
00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:01.399
There you go, Yeah, I love it.

155
00:07:01.399 --> 00:07:03.519
There's a few influencers out there that we're going to

156
00:07:03.560 --> 00:07:06.439
be doing a few little mini challenges with, so you

157
00:07:06.439 --> 00:07:09.399
should definitely come back to our socials to check that

158
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:11.160
out because there'll be some really good stuff.

159
00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:14.920
However, this is Joey's the man for TikTok, so well.

160
00:07:14.759 --> 00:07:17.000
It's an Instagram one, but again it's something we did

161
00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.360
this weekend. So I played his leg as a guitar,

162
00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:20.680
just played it, bro.

163
00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:25.879
It was a guitar tutorial at Bloodstock when you're camping

164
00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:27.399
in a tent, how you play guitar.

165
00:07:27.800 --> 00:07:29.360
He just happened to use my leg.

166
00:07:29.480 --> 00:07:33.120
So it just seemed guitarish. So yeah, and he's his practice.

167
00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:35.240
That's beautiful. I love that.

168
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:40.079
Now, since you're playing a festival in Burmham, are you

169
00:07:40.199 --> 00:07:43.160
going to do a cover of an Ozzie or Sabbath song?

170
00:07:44.360 --> 00:07:48.199
I would love to, you know what, that was one

171
00:07:48.199 --> 00:07:50.839
of the biggest losses the mel industry.

172
00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:51.279
I've ever had.

173
00:07:51.319 --> 00:07:54.800
Honestly, it's like I don't often get it up on celebrities,

174
00:07:54.920 --> 00:07:58.680
but generally it was like genuinely it was Chester Bennington

175
00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:01.600
and now Assie. Yeah, Jen, like those two hit me

176
00:08:01.720 --> 00:08:03.319
really odd. So like, we would love to do a

177
00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:05.160
tribute to him. Maybe we could pull it out of

178
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:06.279
the bag we hadn't plant of it.

179
00:08:06.360 --> 00:08:07.360
That might be a good idea too.

180
00:08:07.399 --> 00:08:09.519
Yeah, I gave you a good idea racking.

181
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:11.759
A little bit of BARANOI just weaved in there.

182
00:08:11.920 --> 00:08:13.680
We could probably, you know what, we might be able

183
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:15.079
to weave it into one of our songs. I'd be

184
00:08:15.079 --> 00:08:16.839
pretty kisick, wasn't it Half and half?

185
00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:18.680
That would be fucking cool.

186
00:08:19.399 --> 00:08:19.839
It wouldn't be.

187
00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:23.720
It wouldn't be the first time. So yeah, done some

188
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:25.920
weird stuff? Yeah, should be good.

189
00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:28.439
What's the weirdest cover you ever did?

190
00:08:28.759 --> 00:08:31.360
We did a cover of I Mean, this is going

191
00:08:31.399 --> 00:08:33.399
to be out there for a lot of metal people,

192
00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:37.320
but Man's not hot. It was the viral video from

193
00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:40.840
a grime artist. We've done Dua Leaper, we did Physical

194
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:41.679
by Dua Leaper.

195
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:42.840
We've done.

196
00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:45.320
We called it Surreyer Boy, but it was a cover

197
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:48.840
of Soldier Boy. So just some really random stuff to

198
00:08:48.879 --> 00:08:49.440
be honest.

199
00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:51.159
At school, not a lot of metal.

200
00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:57.039
So I have a granddaughter that she's a total swiftie swift.

201
00:08:57.080 --> 00:08:58.000
I've always wanted to do.

202
00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:04.159
And so she was in the car with me and

203
00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:11.080
I played the I Prevail Blank Spaces. I love song

204
00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:17.440
and I definitely think better than the original.

205
00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:21.320
So she didn't want to admit that she liked it.

206
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:23.840
And then when we got back to the house, she

207
00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:28.840
was in her room and looked it up and was

208
00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:35.840
playing it, and I walked in and like, caught you, nail.

209
00:09:37.080 --> 00:09:40.919
I love them, They're amazing, and that they hate playing

210
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:44.120
that song because well because they have to keep playing

211
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:47.720
it forever. Now, yeah, yeah, it gets old, Like you're

212
00:09:47.720 --> 00:09:50.440
an artist. We gotta played the same ship over and

213
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:53.679
over again. And that's what I think. He made a

214
00:09:53.720 --> 00:09:57.399
comment last time, like, Okay, I guess we got played

215
00:09:57.399 --> 00:09:58.919
the most requested song.

216
00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:04.679
I'm sure we'll get to that point eventually.

217
00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:11.480
Right, it'll be your version at the Birmingham first.

218
00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:15.000
I mean, it's not a bad cover to live with exactly.

219
00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:17.840
It could be a lot worse. I mean, if it

220
00:10:17.960 --> 00:10:19.960
was going to do any cover, it's going to be

221
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:20.200
on it.

222
00:10:20.399 --> 00:10:20.600
Well.

223
00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:22.639
I look forward to you guys killing it here at

224
00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:26.159
Bloodstock tomorrow. And thanks for being on the Adventures paint Man.

225
00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:30.200
Thank you very very much for having us.

226
00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:33.080
My pleasure, I mean an absolute pleasure. Just check this

227
00:10:33.240 --> 00:10:36.200
mine now that's where the bands are at.

228
00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:40.919
Well, you'll talk to your cousin and ask him to

229
00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:43.159
tell you about voting for me.

230
00:10:43.879 --> 00:10:44.320
We will.

231
00:10:44.519 --> 00:10:46.240
I'll ask him on the car journey tomorrow.

232
00:10:46.360 --> 00:10:46.879
There you go.

233
00:10:47.320 --> 00:10:49.919
Whatever it is, however weird it is, I'll still vote

234
00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:51.120
for here. It makes no doubt. I don't care what

235
00:10:51.159 --> 00:10:52.240
you're doing. I'll vote for you.

236
00:10:52.440 --> 00:10:55.399
I love it well and I'll vote for you guys

237
00:10:55.759 --> 00:10:58.559
to win Bloodstock, forget metal to the masses.

238
00:10:58.679 --> 00:11:00.200
Thank you, blood.

239
00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:03.440
Machine Head has nothing on you.

240
00:11:04.360 --> 00:11:05.240
Oh yeah, yeah.

241
00:11:08.759 --> 00:11:09.039
Thanks.

242
00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:15.600
Michelle Kerr was my press officer for my entire fucking

243
00:11:16.039 --> 00:11:19.200
career here in the UK, my entire career.

244
00:11:18.919 --> 00:11:19.840
With machine.

245
00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:25.559
She recently passed away and it was a very very

246
00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:28.279
sad day. And I can tell you the reason that

247
00:11:28.360 --> 00:11:32.159
I'm going to tell this story because she was family.

248
00:11:32.679 --> 00:11:36.039
She was Bloodstock family, she was heavy.

249
00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:37.159
Metal UK family.

250
00:11:39.320 --> 00:11:40.960
Most of the balls.

251
00:11:40.840 --> 00:11:44.039
That you know and love you probably heard of because

252
00:11:44.039 --> 00:11:50.120
of that woman right there. Slip knots, Slayer Machine, had

253
00:11:50.279 --> 00:11:57.240
Trivium killswitch, engage, hey reed, you name it. She helped

254
00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:01.000
lift everybody up man, She helped lift everybody up, and

255
00:12:01.039 --> 00:12:05.399
in so many ways, she helped make this entire music scene,

256
00:12:05.679 --> 00:12:10.039
this incredible, beautiful community that lives here at bloodstock Man.

257
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:12.919
She helped make it. So, ladies and.

258
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:15.120
Gentlemen, please make some noise from Michelle Curve.

259
00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:25.360
Thank you for listening to the Adventures of plate Man

260
00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:29.440
on w for CUI Radio.
