PipemanRadio speaks with Conjurer at Download XXIII Donington Park about their performance at the legendary music festival.

British sludge-metal band Conjurer performed on Saturday, June 13, at the Download Festival. They played an explosive set at Donington Park as part of the festival's 2026 lineup.

Their 2026 performance continued their strong history with the festival. Previously, Conjurer made their debut at the UK event in 2019 and returned this summer following their North American headline tour.

00:00:04.639 --> 00:00:12.320
Hi, you have done to censure? Wow for you you.

2
00:00:19.359 --> 00:00:21.640
This is the pipe Man here on the Adventures pipe

3
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:24.000
Man W four c Y Radio, and I'm here with.

4
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:25.320
Danny from Conjura.

5
00:00:25.800 --> 00:00:29.559
Nice here at download. How's it feel to be at download?

6
00:00:29.839 --> 00:00:33.000
Yeah, it feels pretty good. I'm glad it's not raining.

7
00:00:33.359 --> 00:00:36.320
Oh my god. That's because i'm here. I'll tell you why.

8
00:00:37.159 --> 00:00:40.520
It's funny because my friend over here, who's a photographer,

9
00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:44.399
he he brought it up. I've been coming here for years.

10
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:47.399
There's only one year I haven't come since I started

11
00:00:47.399 --> 00:00:49.039
coming that you're at COVID.

12
00:00:49.399 --> 00:00:50.920
That was a drownload year.

13
00:00:51.079 --> 00:00:51.280
Yeah.

14
00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:53.479
Every other year we have.

15
00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.000
Not had drownload that I've been here, So I'm gonna

16
00:00:57.039 --> 00:00:57.520
take credit.

17
00:00:57.600 --> 00:00:58.719
You're the magic Man.

18
00:00:58.600 --> 00:00:59.280
I know, right.

19
00:00:59.640 --> 00:01:03.600
But yeah, it is a lot better when it's not raining, right, Yeah.

20
00:01:03.640 --> 00:01:06.640
What's it like when you're a band and it's raining

21
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:07.040
like that?

22
00:01:08.280 --> 00:01:11.079
Everything's just worse. Everything is just work Like.

23
00:01:11.640 --> 00:01:15.439
I mean, I'm not good with like sweltering heat, as

24
00:01:15.480 --> 00:01:17.719
I suppose no one is really, but like this is

25
00:01:17.760 --> 00:01:20.719
a really nice temperature, Like it's nice and bright, but

26
00:01:20.760 --> 00:01:21.760
there is a breeze.

27
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:24.439
You're not too like or anything like that.

28
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:26.920
So yeah, it's a little chill in the air.

29
00:01:27.719 --> 00:01:28.760
I love a bit of a breeze.

30
00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:33.200
Yeah, I love it, and I don't even know. Have

31
00:01:33.319 --> 00:01:34.719
you played Download before?

32
00:01:35.079 --> 00:01:35.400
Yes?

33
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:39.439
The first time was twenty nineteen. The second time was

34
00:01:39.480 --> 00:01:42.359
when it was the Download pilot. Oh yeah, when it

35
00:01:42.480 --> 00:01:46.560
was opening up for after COVID and everything. That was

36
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:48.480
twenty twenty one, and then this one.

37
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:49.480
Nice.

38
00:01:49.959 --> 00:01:54.400
So what have you seen change so far of what

39
00:01:54.480 --> 00:01:57.599
you know of Download since your first time playing here?

40
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:01.000
It feels like a different festival every time I come here.

41
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:04.120
I mean, I know, it doesn't help. The last time

42
00:02:04.120 --> 00:02:06.719
we were here five years ago, was it was like

43
00:02:06.840 --> 00:02:10.280
ten percent capacity or whatever? But yeah, every time I

44
00:02:10.360 --> 00:02:14.960
come here, I never remember like any of the spots

45
00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:18.719
or anywhere anything is like. So yeah, it always feels different,

46
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:20.560
but it always feels fun.

47
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:22.120
That's the important Now.

48
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:25.199
As an artist with that attitude, could I go through

49
00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:28.639
that too? Because I do festivals all over. Do you

50
00:02:28.840 --> 00:02:33.280
feel it's better because it's like, oh, we're playing a

51
00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:37.240
new place mindset, or do you feel it's more stressful

52
00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:39.840
because you knew where everything was and now you guys

53
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:40.360
start over.

54
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:43.639
I suppose it's not particularly stressful for me.

55
00:02:43.879 --> 00:02:47.719
Whereas my bandmate Brady, he may say otherwise, he's the

56
00:02:47.719 --> 00:02:50.120
one that deals with all the logistics and everything. But

57
00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:55.280
now it always feels pretty smooth. It never feels like

58
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:00.240
particularly chaotic or anything like that. Everyone seems to know

59
00:03:00.280 --> 00:03:02.879
what they're doing. Everyone knows the rules of the game

60
00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:05.400
sort of thing. So yeah, it's always it's always quite

61
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:06.639
a breeze come in here.

62
00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:08.759
So do you.

63
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:11.759
Feel too like on what you're saying?

64
00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:16.039
Well, how do you feel the people that run down

65
00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:19.240
load treat you as an artist very well?

66
00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:23.199
There's not much more to add to it, like they

67
00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:26.680
treat us very well. They sort out catering. Everyone knows

68
00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:28.439
like where to send you if you need to go

69
00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:32.919
to different areas and whatnot. No one's ever mean, no

70
00:03:32.919 --> 00:03:36.520
one's ever like rushing you around. It's all very chill,

71
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:39.719
considering how big it is and considering how you know

72
00:03:40.280 --> 00:03:43.560
the cogs of the machine at work and all that. Like,

73
00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:45.800
it is a very chilled atmosphere.

74
00:03:45.960 --> 00:03:50.319
I think that's so key for an artist, because nothing's

75
00:03:50.360 --> 00:03:54.680
worse than having stress from loading, from sound check and

76
00:03:54.759 --> 00:03:59.560
everything else. You're a enough going on. It's much easier

77
00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:02.560
to really give a great performance if you have none

78
00:04:02.599 --> 00:04:03.319
of that stress.

79
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:06.159
Yeah, Like you just want to be able to turn up,

80
00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:08.960
know exactly where you're putting your stuff, know exactly when

81
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:10.639
you need to be at whatever area.

82
00:04:11.080 --> 00:04:15.520
Like, yeah, So your next festival is one that I

83
00:04:15.560 --> 00:04:18.000
love too, that I normally do every year. This year

84
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:20.879
I'm not because I'm doing some Father's Day thing, which

85
00:04:20.920 --> 00:04:21.720
is more important.

86
00:04:21.879 --> 00:04:26.319
But that's something I've heard about. That one too, hell fest.

87
00:04:26.519 --> 00:04:29.439
Like I went to one with three hundred and sixty

88
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:34.360
bands right after COVID, Yeah, and not one band went

89
00:04:34.439 --> 00:04:34.959
on late.

90
00:04:35.399 --> 00:04:37.240
That was the one. It was two weekends.

91
00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:40.240
Yes, Oh it was brutal. It was brutal. Yeah, Like

92
00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:43.000
it was fun too, don't get me wrong. Yeah, but

93
00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:47.680
you know, two weekends. I was like, okay, can I

94
00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:48.240
rest now?

95
00:04:48.439 --> 00:04:48.639
Yeah?

96
00:04:49.160 --> 00:04:51.360
I struggle after like two and a half days of

97
00:04:51.399 --> 00:04:54.319
a festival, let alone like virtually a whole week of it.

98
00:04:54.240 --> 00:04:56.240
Like, right, you know what's fie about that.

99
00:04:56.600 --> 00:04:59.360
Sometimes I'll bring my youngest daughter to a festival and

100
00:04:59.399 --> 00:05:03.480
she's thirty, but like halfway through the first day and

101
00:05:03.560 --> 00:05:06.120
not even halfway, like a couple hours in, She's like, Dad,

102
00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:07.079
I don't know how you do this.

103
00:05:07.160 --> 00:05:08.920
Every weekend I'm done already.

104
00:05:09.199 --> 00:05:12.720
Yeah, it's it's a very I say to people a

105
00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:14.800
lot when they ask me about like the band and

106
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.240
touring and all this kind of stuff. All of this

107
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:20.759
stuff is a very very weird thing for humans to do,

108
00:05:21.240 --> 00:05:25.879
Like it's not normal, like whether it's camping out in

109
00:05:25.879 --> 00:05:28.639
a field for however many days of the week, or

110
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:31.360
if you're in a touring band, like going from city

111
00:05:31.399 --> 00:05:34.560
to city, all this stuff, like it's very strange for

112
00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:37.639
humans to do. And it's it's very taxing, but it's

113
00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:40.360
kind of high risk, high reward, like you're gonna get

114
00:05:40.439 --> 00:05:42.720
run down, but you're gonna have a great time.

115
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:43.319
No doubt.

116
00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:47.360
Well let's say, like my viewpoint, like yeah, there's other things,

117
00:05:47.759 --> 00:05:50.160
but I just love it, like it's a it's a

118
00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:54.279
drug almost, you know. And it is funny because a

119
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:58.560
lot of times clean today, no chance to eat, haven't

120
00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:01.839
eaten yet, And I right, And I know a lot

121
00:06:01.879 --> 00:06:04.120
of artists that they never make it on time to

122
00:06:04.199 --> 00:06:06.160
catering because no time.

123
00:06:06.439 --> 00:06:10.199
Yeah, you know. So I don't think people realize that's

124
00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:11.160
why bringing.

125
00:06:10.920 --> 00:06:14.519
Up how hard it is to do this, you know,

126
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:17.959
and how hard an artist works, Like they think, I'm

127
00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:19.920
sure you get it all the time. Oh, you're living

128
00:06:19.959 --> 00:06:23.759
the dream life. Part of that's true, and then there's

129
00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:27.120
the other part of it, like anything else in life. Yeah,

130
00:06:27.160 --> 00:06:29.920
you know, so I like people to know that you're

131
00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:30.879
not just gaying up.

132
00:06:30.839 --> 00:06:31.759
There and have a good time.

133
00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:36.000
There's a lot more things involved that it is a job,

134
00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:40.839
you know, Like people think that their job doing something

135
00:06:40.839 --> 00:06:44.680
else is more work than what you're doing.

136
00:06:45.079 --> 00:06:45.680
It's really not.

137
00:06:46.199 --> 00:06:48.600
Yeah, I've had it before where people are like, oh,

138
00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:51.120
you're off gallivanting seeing the world and this and that,

139
00:06:51.160 --> 00:06:53.120
and it's like, no, we see like.

140
00:06:53.279 --> 00:06:55.000
The two block.

141
00:06:54.839 --> 00:06:57.639
Radius that the venue is in and there's usually like

142
00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:01.839
someone shooting up drugs behind or like it's you know,

143
00:07:01.959 --> 00:07:05.759
it's just there's it's not glamorous at all, but it

144
00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:07.399
is very very fun.

145
00:07:07.560 --> 00:07:08.040
No doubt.

146
00:07:08.199 --> 00:07:10.000
And you don't always get to see the bands you

147
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.600
want to, Like I think I had like twenty bands

148
00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.000
between yesterday and day I had on my list that

149
00:07:15.079 --> 00:07:16.399
I was gonna see.

150
00:07:16.360 --> 00:07:16.800
And did it.

151
00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:20.639
Yeah you know, and oh, I'll catch them next time,

152
00:07:20.920 --> 00:07:23.279
and then next time it's the same thing, you know.

153
00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:26.000
So I like to paint that picture to the listeners,

154
00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:27.879
even like when I got here, I got done with

155
00:07:27.959 --> 00:07:34.199
Milwaukee Metal Fest flew here with jetlag, no sleep for

156
00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:38.800
those four days. And I got here and I was

157
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:41.600
like very happy about the rain on Wednesday because I

158
00:07:41.639 --> 00:07:42.399
got here on Tuesday.

159
00:07:42.480 --> 00:07:44.639
I was gonna come here. On Wednesday. I saw the rain,

160
00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:45.600
I'm like, fuck it.

161
00:07:46.120 --> 00:07:48.720
And I slept like the whole day and thank god,

162
00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:50.800
because I would probably be even more dead now.

163
00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:53.920
Yeah, you know, and that is the lifestyle. It's like

164
00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:58.319
sneaking to sleep when you can, sneaking the food when

165
00:07:58.399 --> 00:07:58.759
you can.

166
00:07:59.000 --> 00:07:59.439
Yeah.

167
00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:02.399
But that we wouldn't do it if we didn't love

168
00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:06.120
it exactly. And that's the point. So are you looking

169
00:08:06.120 --> 00:08:07.120
forward to hell Fest?

170
00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:09.000
Oh? Yeah, I love going to Hellfest.

171
00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:12.319
It's amazing, so weird because it's like it's kind of

172
00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:16.040
in the middle of nowhere, but it's so big. It

173
00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:17.839
just feels like its own kind of city.

174
00:08:18.040 --> 00:08:21.319
It's like it is like they've pretty much taken over Clisson.

175
00:08:21.639 --> 00:08:23.120
Yeah, you know, it's wild.

176
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:25.480
And I remember the first time I went there, and

177
00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:27.920
I do festivals all over to the US, UK and Europe.

178
00:08:27.959 --> 00:08:33.440
I'm like, holy shit, and I'm like, this is like amazing.

179
00:08:33.960 --> 00:08:34.759
I found like.

180
00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:39.600
Multiple stages that were hidden like on top of a

181
00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:43.000
merch building, you know, and stuff like that, and like

182
00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:47.360
and then I remember one night they were doing grocery

183
00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:52.879
court races in the campground of Like it's just it

184
00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:56.440
is amazing that any of these festivals like that, like

185
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:05.120
Download can put on such a big production. It runs smoothly. Yeah,

186
00:09:05.559 --> 00:09:09.120
Like hats off to whoever runs everything, because how do

187
00:09:09.159 --> 00:09:09.759
you do that?

188
00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:10.600
Yeah?

189
00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:14.799
I mean the last time we played Hellfest, it was

190
00:09:14.919 --> 00:09:19.039
I think twenty twenty three, and I remember us going

191
00:09:19.080 --> 00:09:22.480
on stage. It was at nighttime and there were tons

192
00:09:22.519 --> 00:09:25.240
of people in the tent, which was already like astounding,

193
00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:29.159
but they have all the like fire and stuff going

194
00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:31.240
off in the background. Like I was playing the set

195
00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:33.720
and I found myself just zoning out and looking at

196
00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:36.960
all like the flames and the pyro and all this stuff.

197
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:40.039
Was just like this is awesome. Oh wait yeah right

198
00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:41.639
right right yeah.

199
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:44.399
The first time I went, I'm like, holy shit, I

200
00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:49.639
am in Hell. Yeah, it's like wild and that. What

201
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:52.279
was funny that first year after COVID is the first

202
00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:56.559
weekend it was in fair Night one hundred and four degrees,

203
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:00.799
which I think is like almost fifty or something like that,

204
00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:06.000
somewhere somewhere I think above forty. Yeah, I live in

205
00:10:06.039 --> 00:10:09.559
South Florida where it's seriously hot and humid, and I'm

206
00:10:09.559 --> 00:10:11.720
telling you, I was praying to go back home so

207
00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:14.639
I could cool down. Yeah, I couldn't even do I

208
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.919
couldn't even do interviews in the press tent and a

209
00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:21.000
black press ten and you know, I was interviewing John

210
00:10:21.080 --> 00:10:24.240
from Skillett and literally we couldn't even see each other.

211
00:10:24.519 --> 00:10:27.519
Like the sweat was coming into my eyes. My eyes

212
00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:31.679
were burning, and it was like, oh my god, this

213
00:10:31.879 --> 00:10:33.720
is like this is Hell.

214
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:36.399
You're painting a very attractive picture.

215
00:10:36.279 --> 00:10:38.519
I know, but it's still one of my favorite festivals

216
00:10:38.559 --> 00:10:42.279
in the whole world. With all that, and that's my point.

217
00:10:42.440 --> 00:10:44.960
These places. You know, a lot of people around the

218
00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.759
world will complain about stuff, but you know what, at

219
00:10:47.840 --> 00:10:50.080
least we have live music. We didn't have that for

220
00:10:50.120 --> 00:10:54.440
a while, and focus on the fun stuff. And like

221
00:10:54.480 --> 00:10:57.679
for you as a band, you know, yeah, it's a

222
00:10:57.759 --> 00:10:59.360
lot of fun to get up there and the whole

223
00:10:59.399 --> 00:11:02.279
crowd is singing back your songs and everything else, you know,

224
00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:03.960
So that's amazing.

225
00:11:04.279 --> 00:11:06.720
Yeah, it rules anything else you.

226
00:11:06.759 --> 00:11:08.480
Got coming up that you want to talk about that

227
00:11:08.559 --> 00:11:10.440
we haven't covered that the listeners need to know.

228
00:11:10.840 --> 00:11:14.360
So after Hellfest, we have another festival in France called

229
00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:19.960
rockin Ballong. After that it's Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic.

230
00:11:21.480 --> 00:11:24.440
After that, I believe we have Arcs and Gent in

231
00:11:24.519 --> 00:11:25.519
Bristol the UK.

232
00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:26.279
Nice.

233
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:30.919
After that, we have a short run in the UK

234
00:11:31.080 --> 00:11:32.200
with a band called Korea.

235
00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:33.240
I think it's great.

236
00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:36.279
I know them, Yeah, they're great. Yeah, it's a great

237
00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:36.879
line and.

238
00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:40.559
It's all like my favorite UK venues, which is really nice.

239
00:11:40.600 --> 00:11:42.679
It's only like a week, but yeah, it'll be great.

240
00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:46.039
And then finally to close off the year, I believe

241
00:11:46.080 --> 00:11:49.360
in November we're on tour with de veg Eine Freiheit,

242
00:11:49.720 --> 00:11:53.639
who are German blackmail band. That's a much longer one

243
00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:56.039
in Europe, and then that's it off for Christmas.

244
00:11:56.440 --> 00:11:56.799
Nice.

245
00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:01.799
It's funny you mentioned Korea because I I don't. I

246
00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:04.799
think it was blunt Stock. I don't remember. But I

247
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:08.879
had an interview with them and there was this female

248
00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:12.039
standing like right behind me and we started talking talking,

249
00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:15.559
and she's like, oh, I gotta go. I got an interview.

250
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:19.960
It was the interview with me amazing, right, you know,

251
00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:23.759
because sometimes you don't when there, when they look like

252
00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:26.120
that on stage, you have no clue what they look

253
00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:30.320
like when you're talking to them, so anyway, I'm so

254
00:12:30.440 --> 00:12:33.240
glad you're here a download. You guys are badass, and

255
00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:35.120
thanks for being on the Adventures of pipe Man.

256
00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:36.480
Thank you very much, Steve.

257
00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:40.919
Thank you for listening to the Adventures of pipe Man

258
00:12:41.559 --> 00:12:44.960
on w for CUI Radio.
