Deadly Apples, the Montreal-based rock/metal powerhouse, have released their highly anticipated new single, "Volatile," now available on all major streaming platforms. Renowned for their electrifying performances, the band delivers a monumental track that features guest appearances by Richard Patrick of Filter and Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails.

first single from the band’s upcoming album, DISTRESS, slated for release this summer.

"Volatile" is a testament to the band's dedication to working with some of the most respected names in rock and metal.

Frontman / lyricist Alex Martel and drummer / composer Antoine Lamothe – has forged a reputation for its fierce, unpredictable, and high energy live performances often culminating with Martel diving – and drowning – into the crowd. As rock music – and society – has become increasingly safe and bland, the French-Canadian band has received praise for bringing back the danger and unpredictability to unsuspecting audiences.

Interlaced with cinematic atmospheres, poignant melodies, singular screams, gritty analog synths, pummeling drum beats, abrasive guitars, delicate pianos and heartfelt lyrics, DISTRESS is a unique, relevant and modern take on a classic genre that they made their own.

00:01:08.719 --> 00:01:09.519
Thanks for having me?

15
00:01:10.359 --> 00:01:13.000
Oh my pleasure? And can I say right off the bat,

16
00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:16.560
I don't know why, but I just absolutely love your

17
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:17.079
band name.

18
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:18.959
Thank you.

19
00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:23.799
It doesn't even matter why, It's just that it just

20
00:01:23.959 --> 00:01:26.079
rolls off the tongue and sounds cool.

21
00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:29.879
Yeah, that's why I picked it a long time ago.

22
00:01:30.519 --> 00:01:31.120
There you go.

23
00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:35.719
Yeah, and I like the fact that it can have

24
00:01:36.680 --> 00:01:42.480
many different meanings depending on, you know, every person's perspective.

25
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:49.359
So yeah, I love you saying that too, because that

26
00:01:49.480 --> 00:01:52.079
is to me, that is a good name. Where that

27
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:55.599
is cool, you know, where people can just put their

28
00:01:55.640 --> 00:01:59.280
own perspective to whether it's the band, name a song,

29
00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:04.439
name lyrics, because if it's given them joy and given

30
00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:08.639
them therapy, which music does, that's all that matters.

31
00:02:09.960 --> 00:02:11.280
Yeah, yeah, for sure.

32
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:15.840
So tell us about Okay, so you got this new

33
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:20.879
single out off the upcoming new album Voltel, which this

34
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:25.919
song is, it's like, it's pretty badass, just to be blunt.

35
00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:28.199
Thank you, I appreciate.

36
00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:33.560
So tell us how that came about, you know, from

37
00:02:33.560 --> 00:02:38.120
your perspective, what what made this even get on paper

38
00:02:38.360 --> 00:02:40.159
to make a song out of it?

39
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:47.599
Well, uh, you know, we we spent a long time

40
00:02:47.639 --> 00:02:52.680
working on the new album, which is called Distress, and uh,

41
00:02:53.479 --> 00:02:57.319
you know, for a while we weren't exactly sure in

42
00:02:57.400 --> 00:03:01.240
what direction we were going, and we did some pre

43
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:06.840
production work with Michael Beinhorn, who's an amazing producer who's

44
00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:11.360
worked with you know, everyone from Corn to Ozdy to

45
00:03:11.560 --> 00:03:15.680
Sound Garden, and he basically sent us ten pages of

46
00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:23.560
notes which essentially said that it felt restrained and we

47
00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:29.039
should just like go all out with what that Lee

48
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:35.680
Apple is about. And essentially one, my bandmate, who writes

49
00:03:35.800 --> 00:03:40.639
all the music, he started writing songs that were a

50
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:46.680
lot more aggressive, energetic and out of that batch of

51
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:54.039
songs came Volatile, which you know, we're very proud of.

52
00:03:54.879 --> 00:04:00.400
And yeah, the reactions so far has been great. It's

53
00:04:00.439 --> 00:04:05.199
the first single from the album, and yeah, the the

54
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:09.719
the support we've been getting for it has been kind

55
00:04:09.719 --> 00:04:13.120
of overwhelming, so we're we're very grateful for that.

56
00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:17.279
Yeah, it kind of people have been saying, and I agree,

57
00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:20.920
that has this old school industrial sound and like a

58
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:24.199
like a nine Inch Nails type of sound, which makes sense,

59
00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:30.040
but it has its original creativity to it, but it

60
00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.839
has that familiarity to it to where as soon as

61
00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:34.759
you hear the song, you like it.

62
00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:42.759
Oh, thank you. You know. We we actually had Danny Lohner,

63
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:48.079
who was in nine inch Sled and you know, collaborated

64
00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:52.959
with so many amazing artists, everyone from Rob Zombie to

65
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:55.480
a Perfect Circle and you know, the list goes on

66
00:04:55.560 --> 00:04:58.879
and on, and he performed the guitar and bass parts

67
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:02.959
on that song and on the entire album actually, and

68
00:05:03.480 --> 00:05:07.480
we also had Richard Patrick of Filter and who was

69
00:05:07.560 --> 00:05:14.759
also in Nine Inch Nails originally do some harmony vocals

70
00:05:14.759 --> 00:05:19.600
and the choruses. So it was great to have these

71
00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:22.040
guys come in as well and.

72
00:05:23.399 --> 00:05:29.199
Participate in that song and so how did that happen anyway, Like,

73
00:05:29.639 --> 00:05:32.680
tell us a story of what led to them participating

74
00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:33.240
in the song.

75
00:05:35.240 --> 00:05:40.360
Well, I met Danny years ago through an old friend,

76
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:45.199
Fat Mike of No Effects, and I just kept in

77
00:05:45.240 --> 00:05:50.199
touch with Danny over that time. And when time came

78
00:05:50.240 --> 00:05:52.959
for us to go into studio and we were doing

79
00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:57.160
it in La so I hit Danny up and he

80
00:05:57.319 --> 00:06:01.040
was available and was into it. So we we just

81
00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:07.399
did it. And with Richard, we were already following each

82
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:12.480
other on Instagram, and I guess he saw that we

83
00:06:12.519 --> 00:06:17.160
were working with Danny, who he knows, and also with

84
00:06:17.560 --> 00:06:21.399
Ben Gross who mixed the album, and we were actually

85
00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:24.600
working at his studio, so he just offered to come

86
00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:28.279
by try singing on some stuff and it ended up

87
00:06:28.360 --> 00:06:32.040
working out for Volatile, So that's how it came about.

88
00:06:32.720 --> 00:06:36.360
Nice. Well, it definitely I love the song. Everybody's got

89
00:06:36.360 --> 00:06:39.839
to check it out. And so can you tell everybody

90
00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:42.319
how they can connect to you guys on socials on

91
00:06:42.360 --> 00:06:44.160
the web, how they can check out the new song.

92
00:06:44.439 --> 00:06:48.480
The video is really cool too. I think that's a

93
00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:50.879
lot of creativity right there. I love the whole look

94
00:06:50.920 --> 00:06:53.560
at the video. People have to check it out for sure.

95
00:06:53.959 --> 00:06:57.240
Tell them how they can and also pre save the

96
00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:58.720
new album for when it comes out.

97
00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:06.000
Yeah. Well the video was actually directed by my bandmate

98
00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:09.000
at One, who's worked in the in the film industry,

99
00:07:09.600 --> 00:07:13.959
and you know, we're we're definitely proud of that. And

100
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.319
yeah that the video is was just recently released on YouTube.

101
00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:26.560
But otherwise the song is all all platforms Spotify, Apple

102
00:07:26.680 --> 00:07:32.519
Music and basically the plan is to release the full

103
00:07:32.600 --> 00:07:36.959
album this coming summer, and in the meantime we'll keep

104
00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.040
releasing more songs from the album and more music videos.

105
00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:44.480
So there's there's a lot more coming and this is

106
00:07:44.519 --> 00:07:46.240
really just the first step.

107
00:07:47.519 --> 00:07:51.000
Nice and yeah, and at the end of March, March

108
00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:54.160
twenty ninth, you're going to be playing a festival in Lima, Peru.

109
00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:57.439
That's pretty cool. I do a lot of festivals. I

110
00:07:57.439 --> 00:08:00.199
didn't even think of Peru as a place to go

111
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:03.439
and for a music festival myself, and I'm like all

112
00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:06.720
over the world. So have you ever played this festival?

113
00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:12.079
We played twice in Peru actually, and the crowds there

114
00:08:12.120 --> 00:08:16.600
are insane. Uh. The first time the first time, Deftones

115
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:20.360
was the headliner. Second time it was with slip Knot

116
00:08:20.439 --> 00:08:25.560
in the massive Stadium, and yeah, the crowds there are insane,

117
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:30.199
so we're we're looking forward to going back. And they

118
00:08:30.279 --> 00:08:33.759
got a great lineup on that festival, you know, Evente Sevenfold,

119
00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:38.679
Marilyn Manson and Thrax, so it's gonna it's gonna be

120
00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:39.440
pretty huge.

121
00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:41.559
Yeah, I definitely think I want to go to that

122
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:45.759
festival myself, And especially after what you said, like, I

123
00:08:45.799 --> 00:08:49.000
wonder if it's because they don't have as much of

124
00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:53.480
it that you know, the US has Europe, as UK Canada,

125
00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.240
so they really instead like like people here in the US,

126
00:08:58.279 --> 00:09:00.559
we have so much of it that people can plane

127
00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:03.600
and I'm like, man, we didn't have music for two years.

128
00:09:03.639 --> 00:09:07.440
I wouldn't complain about anything now. So I think Peru

129
00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:11.120
and places like that kind of maybe have that same vibe.

130
00:09:11.159 --> 00:09:13.080
It's like they're so thankful to have it.

131
00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:17.639
I think it's probably part of it because whenever we

132
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:22.840
play in South America or Mexico, you know, people go crazy.

133
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:26.799
And also I just it's probably part of their culture,

134
00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:32.320
like just the party atmosphere, and they're just more more

135
00:09:32.440 --> 00:09:37.600
loose down there. It feels like as opposed to places

136
00:09:37.639 --> 00:09:42.320
like Japan, for instance, where they're super polite. They just clap,

137
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:45.960
they jump up and down. No mash bits, no crowdsurfing,

138
00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:51.600
which is a cool experience as well. But you know,

139
00:09:51.679 --> 00:09:56.279
that's what's interesting, getting to travel the world and just

140
00:09:56.360 --> 00:10:00.279
seeing how the crowds are different depending on all the

141
00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:06.279
different cultures and even within the same country. Like you know, obviously,

142
00:10:06.360 --> 00:10:10.799
when we play in the US, massive country, and you know,

143
00:10:10.840 --> 00:10:15.480
and it feels like when we're in some more rural states,

144
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:20.639
people are more intense than when we play some of

145
00:10:20.679 --> 00:10:25.960
the bigger cities. Yeah, because I guess, you know, as

146
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:31.080
you mentioned in the sense, people when they have every

147
00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.919
single band that's ever existed playing in their city like

148
00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.159
every single night, they some people might become a bit

149
00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:42.360
jaded and they don't, you know, they don't have the

150
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:48.039
excitement of if you're in a smaller town and you know,

151
00:10:48.120 --> 00:10:53.639
there's only a few amazing shows every year. But yeah,

152
00:10:53.639 --> 00:10:56.639
it's definitely interesting seeing all those those differences.

153
00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:01.039
I agree, and I say it myself in my country here,

154
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:04.679
because like going to a festival in Florida compared to

155
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:10.279
Louisville compared to California is like three different worlds right

156
00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:15.120
there alone, you know. And then you know, going overseas,

157
00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:19.559
you know, yeah, I do Download and Bloodstock in the UK,

158
00:11:19.759 --> 00:11:22.039
which are it's very close to each other, but they're

159
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:25.799
totally different festivals. But people are like, it's almost like

160
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:29.840
a cultish thing there, you know, especially with Bloodstock. You know,

161
00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:33.919
that's like a there's a coldish falling to that festival.

162
00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:35.840
There's one I do here in the United States like

163
00:11:35.879 --> 00:11:39.799
that called Rockklahoma and like one of the most insane

164
00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:43.960
campgrounds of any festival I've ever been to. It's like

165
00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.559
it's just they have this whole own little world there.

166
00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:49.960
So yeah, you're right. And then I think you guys

167
00:11:49.960 --> 00:11:54.679
have played at Hellfest before, which I've covered, and man,

168
00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:57.720
that place that's like just a city.

169
00:11:58.679 --> 00:12:04.639
Yeah. Uh, that's probably the most impressive festival I've ever seen.

170
00:12:04.679 --> 00:12:11.080
It feels like you're walking in Disneyland. That for for

171
00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:16.080
rockers and metal heads, you know, it's it's insane what

172
00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.120
they what they built there, for sure. Yeah, that was

173
00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:23.360
an amazing festival to play, I bet.

174
00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:27.320
And you know it's funny because I said the same

175
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:30.159
thing the first time I covered Hellfest. I said the

176
00:12:30.200 --> 00:12:32.120
same thing to my daughter. I'm like, it's like being

177
00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:37.519
at Disneyland because it is so cool and like One

178
00:12:37.519 --> 00:12:39.759
of the most memorable things is I was running through,

179
00:12:40.039 --> 00:12:42.279
walking through the little village, and there was a band

180
00:12:42.360 --> 00:12:45.240
performing on a stage on a roof that the stage

181
00:12:45.320 --> 00:12:48.080
was no bigger than like a kitchen table or something,

182
00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:51.879
you know, but it was like just such a cool vibe.

183
00:12:51.879 --> 00:12:57.000
And then the Lemmy sculpture is pretty wild. And then

184
00:12:57.080 --> 00:12:59.919
you got what I thought was cool too, is yet

185
00:13:00.120 --> 00:13:05.679
these stages that were dedicated to very specific genres, like

186
00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:08.799
you had the death metal stage, you had the black

187
00:13:08.840 --> 00:13:13.799
metal stage, the hardcore stage, and so yeah, it was

188
00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:16.559
just really a wild experience. And then after it was over,

189
00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:21.039
you know, walking into campground, I was watching shopping court races.

190
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:27.720
So yeah, yeah, So anything else you got going on

191
00:13:28.200 --> 00:13:30.759
that you know of As far as live dates in

192
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:34.440
twenty twenty five, we've.

193
00:13:34.200 --> 00:13:38.320
Got a bunch of stuff that's still not one hundred

194
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:41.480
percent confirmed, but hopefully we'll be able to announce it

195
00:13:41.559 --> 00:13:45.080
soon that the plan is definitely to play more shows,

196
00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:49.840
tour more come back to the US. I'm not sure

197
00:13:49.879 --> 00:13:53.120
when this is being released. That next week we're actually

198
00:13:53.159 --> 00:13:57.799
announcing a festival that we're going to be doing in

199
00:13:57.879 --> 00:13:58.919
Florida that.

200
00:14:00.039 --> 00:14:04.360
I think, Yeah, so I know which one too. And

201
00:14:04.440 --> 00:14:09.000
I'll probably be there so we'll talk there. So cool.

202
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:13.320
I love it, and you know, everybody's got to check

203
00:14:13.360 --> 00:14:15.480
you guys out, if they haven't seen you before, if

204
00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:18.960
they are fans already. Man, this new music is incredible.

205
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:21.480
I love it. I can't wait to see it live.

206
00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:24.279
