First Time at Rocklahoma: She Hates Me Not Breaks Down Their Ambitions and Gigs

Besides it being hotter than hell here. What did it feel like playing up there on that stage tonight? It felt great. I think the biggest accomplishment for us was just finishing it without having a heat stroke. No doubt, right? And listen, there are like major musicians that have heat stroke all the time and stuff like this.

0:50 It blows my mind how you guys can even play up there. I'm too hot just standing there. Yeah, it's pretty hot. So is this your first time playing Rock, Lahoma? Yes, this is our first time. So how did it all happen? That is a great question. I'm going to tell Cade to answer that question. All right. That is a very good question. Can you repeat the question? How did you get to Rock, Oklahoma? How did this all happen? Not how you drove here, but how did this all happen? Well, we've been trying to play it for a while. Our manager, we call him the horse.

1:30 He's a cool dude. He's in charge of booking us and doing all the management side of things. So as far as getting us a show here, yeah, just reached out and went back and forth and then made it work. Did it kind of blow your mind when you got the news that you were playing it? Yeah, we were definitely super excited, yeah. So what was going through your mind before even coming to Rock, Oklahoma of what this was going to be like? You can say whatever the fuck you want. Don't fuck up. That's what I was thinking the whole time. I know we were all thinking this is big for us. We need to dial in everything and make sure we deliver our best because lots of new faces, lots of people.

2:15 Just a big moment for us. Nice. I think my thought was the show is just like any other show. It's like the last one we play and it's like the next one. It's just like the same approach for me. Just had a coffee at midday and You called it good. Yeah, I mean, I would agree. Firm believer of you're only as good as your last performance. So I just wanted to come out strong, all the energy. I mean, I wanted to start the festival off strong, be the first band. Nice. And I'll tell you what, too. I was really shocked because I'm from New York and New Jersey, and I came all the way to Oklahoma to see somebody dressed up like a Yankee. I didn't imagine that in Oklahoma.

3:02 So what was the concert you guys went to that you just went like, this is what I want to do? My first concert was the Foo Fighters at the Zoo Amphitheater in OKC. And Radke opened for them. They're a cool band. They are cool. And I don't know. Something about it. I saw them. And then shortly after, I saw Alanis Morissette live. And. I know it's not like anything what. We play, but the feeling you get of being at a concert is like, man, if I can make people feel the way I felt at those concerts, then that's one hell of a feat for me. And that's the thing. It doesn't matter. Live music is live music. So there is a feeling, even if it's not your genre.

3:47 You know, for me, honestly, I've probably played more concerts than I've been to. But the show for me that really turned my head, it was Malevolence. They came to Tulsa probably three years ago, and it was like, dang, they actually were heavy. So that was my thing, was like, can I show up and be heavy and bring energy, just like they did. So that was the changer for me. They are one of my favorite bands, for sure. For me, it was actually here a couple years ago when Code Orange came to play, and they just brought the craziest energy of the night, and they were just so lit and awesome. For me, that was the performance that spiked that passion to want to be up there someday too.

4:32 Nice. Bring that same energy. I wish I had a cool story like that. When I was a kid, starting out in music, I went through a DJ phase. Shout out Marshmello and Skrillex. That's why I want to perform. You know what's funny about that? As somebody that's gone to thousands of shows, at first, I never really got the DJ concert thing, like go to a club, yes. But then I did a festival where it had Skrillex and Bass Nectar. And I was like, oh, I get it now. Yeah. The catch is I've never actually seen either one of them live. I would just watch YouTube videos and I'm like, oh, that's sick. I could never figure out like actual DJing though.

5:19 So I kind of gave that up and picked up sticks. Well, you did pretty good at the stick, so maybe it was a good move. Yeah, shout out Skrillex. I think we're all pretty big fans of Skrillex. Alan Walker, too. Oh, yeah. So, Slayer. Oh, yeah? I see Slayer socks. I got those for him. And we have Slayer here at Rock, Oklahoma. First time ever. Dude, you fuck yeah. I was at their first show ever. What? Are you for real? For real. How? Like, where was it? It was in L.A. Wow. Where they started. What club? I think it was the Troubadour. I don't remember. Oh, dude, the Troubadour kicks ass. Yeah. That's a rad venue. I used to go there when I was like 12 and 13.

6:02 Oh, yeah. So I'm looking forward to Slayer. Are you guys going to be here for Slayer? Absolutely. Yes. They're the only one of the big four I haven't seen. Really? Yeah. I've tried to see them twice, had tickets and everything, and, you know. Some bullshit happens. It rains or they cancel or whatever, so I'm very excited to see them. He wants to say something. Yeah, so all of us went to Louder Than Life when Slayer was supposed to play. I was there in the parking lot waiting to the last minute to get back in. Yeah, and it started raining, and we were mad because that was the only day we went for. So we drove all the way there, got rained out, we didn't see Slayer, then we had to drive all the way back.

6:44 And see, now they're here... At Rock, Lahoma. I'm pumped. I've never been to try to see Slayer, but I'm here now. I'm so excited because I think they're one of the sickest bands to ever come out. Given the time they came out and what was around when they came out, they're just one of the sickest. I agree. They're definitely a huge inspiration. They have some of the most badass riffs of any band. Pretty much every opening riff to any one of their songs is just this shit. Dude, I remember sixth grade, I would just be playing Raining Blood on repeat every day in class. It's like core memory for me. Nice. Jet actually introduced me to Slayer whenever I joined the band.

7:27 He didn't know who Bardo was. Yeah, I didn't really listen to metal before. How do you not know? See, you're just like Tom, though. When Tom joined Slayer, he didn't even know what heavy metal was. Yeah, he told me which Metallica albums to listen to. I was at their first show ever, too. What? Stop it. That's insane. For real. Here's my battle vest from the 80s. You can take a look at it. Hell yeah. What? Now you describe that on the air. Now, Slayer didn't even have a patch at that time, so I just did that. GBH kicks ass. I drew all those drawings.

8:07 You got the old Exodus logo. Look at how you knew that. I'm impressed. Dude, that's rad. Was that when Kirk was. Still in the band? That logo? Yeah. Did you see him with Kirk ever? No. But I did see Metallica with Mustaine. Oh, hell yeah. That's freaking cool. Right? Well, what's even cooler is that, I don't know, what was I, like 13, 14? I can't remember. And they play. There were like 25 of us there. And they come off the stage and Mustaine comes up and starts talking to me. Hands me his business card. And it says Metallica Power Metal Dave Mustaine. Because thrash didn't exist yet.

8:53 Not that long ago, I was at this record meet up. Kind of like a swap meet thing with a bunch of records. And I found Metal Up Your Ass on vinyl. I was like, yeah, I'm getting that. That's awesome. Yeah. Somewhere I have the demo tape still from the tape trading days that You can't tell what it says, though, because it's been recorded over, like, 500 times. One of the coolest things I've ever seen with my own two eyes is I was in Vegas not that long ago, and I went to the Metal Blade Museum, and they had the original cassette that Lars handed to Brian Slagle. Yep. The original, the first Metallica recording ever.

9:34 And I saw it with my own two eyes behind a glass case and was like, that is really something cool. So... I used to go to this place in the valley called Oz Records. And there was this really cool record store clerk there. And he used to get a lot of imports. So he used to show us teenagers, you know, all the newest music. Here, check this out. Like for one of the first albums he handed me was venom welcome to hell and uh he used to tell us what shows to go to that was brian slagle nice what that's awesome He was a record store clerk and he started Metal Blade while he was working there.

10:16 He was brilliant because he had all us teenagers going to all his band shows and buying their music. The real thing is like whose first show were you not at? That's the real question. There's probably a lot. Yeah. Sabbath wasn't at their first show. Okay. Well, time period wise. So here's a trivia question for you. What was Black Sabbath's original name? Oh, dude, I know it. Oh, wait. No, I actually knew the Black Sabbaths. I actually know it. Damn, I don't. It was like White Saturday. White Saturday. I don't know. I can't remember.

10:56 You're going to say it, and I'm going to know it. Yeah, literally. Earth. Yeah. I don't know. Damn. And I did see Ozzy with Randy Rhoads. Dude, you lucky motherfucker. It's not even fair. Funny story about that is, you know, my bro and I, we went on New Year's Eve to see Ozzy. I told my dad we were going to sleep over at his house. He told his parents he was sleeping over at my house. We went to Ozzy. The old switcheroo. Yep. You guys probably have done it to your parents. You can fess up now. And we came home from the gig, and we were sitting down, like, at the bum of the hill from where I live.

11:41 And my next-door neighbor came out. Oh. And she's like, oh, did you Aussie boys see Aussie? And we're like, oh, shit, we're busted. Yeah. She goes, wait right there. I'm getting my husband. I'm like, oh, crap. He brings us to the house. He had a room the size of this. That was his studio with cassette tapes all over the wall. And it turned out he was Ozzy's promoter. Are you serious? Who do you not know? It's just right time, man. This guy was in the right place at the right time.

12:23 I lived in New Jersey. My dad said to me in 1980, Hey, pack your bags. We're moving to California in three days. And that's why we're sitting here right now. That's crazy. Yeah, you're like John Heavy Metal. So, if you guys were to pick a band you would go on tour with that is like the one you would want to do most, what would it be? Oh, um. Realistic or like. Unrealistic, whatever. Oh, man. Everything's realistic. Metallica's like ate bologna sandwiches and slept on a floor for ten years. That's true. I don't know. I'd probably pick, um... Like... Crush Your Soul or like Drain or something like that.

13:06 Okay. Yeah. How about you? Dude, like there's so many bands like in the world that I love. But honestly, I'm going to have to say if it was probably 10 years ago, I would say Acacia Strain. But now, no. I got to say like Mindforce, man. I really like Mindforce a lot. All right. Well, I was going to say Mindforce, but I'm going to pick a different one so that it's not the same. Let's think. I would want to do a crossover band, someone that is combining that hardcore thrash vibe. Oh, yeah, Power Trip would be dope.

But I do want to say. we're going to keep working and we're super grateful for the opportunities we've been given and we're going to, we're going to keep working towards what we want to do. And, uh, yeah. Yeah. Also just a shout out a couple of local bands that we really enjoy. Uh, and you should also check out from Tulsa around our seam, uh, leash, uh, dirty work. Yeah. Squelching. We already said, uh, flashpoint. They, they're not, they don't do live shows anymore, but they're, uh, their music.

Playing on one of the bigger stages at Rockahoma, honestly, realistically, I give it three to five years. All right. I'm going to hold you to that. All right.
