Sparkly Chainsaws, Wild Tours, and New Album Entire State of Tim Montana

Back in Montana again. The state of Montana. The entire state. The entire state. I like how that all rolled like that. And we're going to talk about that. But I want to talk about what you brought to the interview. It makes me a little nervous. A few months ago, I interviewed Chop Top. And we had the backdrop was the Dahmer Hotel. And now you're bringing a chainsaw to the interview.

0:55 I'm a little worried that... It might be time to step away from the industry. Well, as long as it doesn't start, you're safe. This chainsaw is black with sparkles on it. Have you ever seen a sparkly chainsaw? I have not. I have not. And it was in Billy Gibbons' warehouse in Nashville. And we own a bar and restaurant together in Montana that's very Western, very. Logging, very... It's Montana, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. All things Montana. Very rock and roll as well. And he's like, hey, man, I have this chainsaw. You need to take it to the bar. So. He just gives me this saw, and I examine it. I know a lot about chainsaws, and it's never been started. There's never been gas in the tank, oil in it. It's sparkly, and on there, it's an emblem that says, specially made for ZZ Top.

1:40 Wow. So who's my first phone call? Jesse james dupree i'm like this doesn't smell like jackal i don't know what does nice and he goes brother i gave that to billy the company johnsard made it for him in 94 it was either the antenna or recycler tour and this was the end of tour gift wow it was presented to zz top and i'm like wow that is super cool a i've never seen a sparkly chainsaw B, it's got an emblem that says, For ZZ Top. And C, Jesse James Dupree has a photo he's going to get me of him presenting that to ZZ on stage. And I want to know what ZZ needed a chainsaw for. You know, I don't know. They had Buffalo and Buzzards on stage, too. They do a lot of interesting, probably to trim the beard. That's Billy's beard trimmer. He's never got it started.

2:28 Right, exactly. You need that to trim that beard, too. Yeah, no kidding. And so, here you are at Rock, Lahoma. Oh, my God. My redemption show. You know, last time we did this interview, I'm walking on stage and the sirens go off. And they tell me to just go home. And I'm like, no, no, no. You don't understand. I flew here with equipment. It was a nightmare to check all this stuff. I hired a driver to drive the other guys from Nashville. Logistically, this is one of my craziest things we've ever pulled off. And they're like, go home. It's canceled. Oh, my. Well, let's hope. Okay, so... Slayer has had festivals canceled due to weather, so let's hope there's no rain and blood on your set here.

3:10 Oh, yeah. I've obviously been canceled before. I've never been walking on stage to the walk-off song and had the show called. That's pretty wild. There was no warning. They didn't come beforehand and. Say, hey, we might be canceled. Just keep that in mind, which you usually hear and then you expect it. This was completely out of nowhere. Sirens start going off and they're like, go home. Holy crap. Then all hell broke loose. So obviously they were correct in calling it. But man, I sat in the Hilton in Tulsa and just pouted. Waiting for my plane. That's Oklahoma for you, though, right? That's like, you know, I live in Florida. And we do Welcome to Rockville.

3:52 And this year, three out of four days, we were evacuated. Oh, terrible. That's what happens when you do it during hurricane season, though. Yeah. And it was funny, though. There were some funny bits of the evacuations this year. Waka Flocka Flame was actually performing when we had a code red. And he said, fuck it. And he jumped off the stage and started a mosh pit. That's pretty funny. Right? And we got canceled. We were opening for Creed and Bush in Minneapolis. And we pulled up and it was canceled for Smoke on September. No, it was in August. And I drove all the way to Minneapolis, flew the band in, and I'd never had a show called For Smoke.

4:36 And I'm making up that show tomorrow. So as soon as this is. Done, we bail. Bush couldn't make it. They had a conflict. So it's Candlebox, P.O.D. We go first, Candlebox, P.O.D., and then Bush. Nice. Sorry, Candlebox, P.O.D., and Creed. Bush is not there. And Incarceration this year in July, same thing. We had like delayed openings and stuff like that due to the smoke from the Canada fire. Same thing. Oh, we had a forest fire all around our property in Montana and we jumped in and ended up catering. My wife and I catered for all the firefighters, 260 to. Go meals a day. Whoa. I couldn't wait till I, we started on Sunday. On Wednesday, I knew I had a show and I had a flight.

5:17 I could not wait to get on tour to relax. That says a lot. Oh, yeah. I was like, oh, my God, I get a hotel room. I don't have to wake up at 3 a.m. after going to bed at midnight. That's kind of like I'm here in Oklahoma and it's been so hot that I'm like, can I go home to Florida to cool down? Exactly. Nobody ever says that. I know. You know? Hey, so Montana, if somebody's never been there before... Where would you recommend the first place they go to check it out? Wise River Club, man. Come on. There it is. The whole state's beautiful, especially the western part, southwest Montana. The reservations are something to see, too. If you get a chance to go to a powwow, go. Oklahoma, it's part of the culture here as well. When I lived in L.A., you don't see Native American culture. Tennessee, you don't really see it. the oklahoma and montana you can't ignore it right it's just exactly part of our overall culture up there and down here so check that stuff out go to a powwow go to helena check out the capital they have a new uh museum there the state cultural center or heritage center montana state heritage center it's free and i was there for the ribbing cuddy and they had all the tribes represented and the governor and all these people that donated to it so i'm a big western history buff And there's plenty of it there.

6:32 See Virginia City. I know I just said 19 things. Butte, Montana. But also. I like that, though. Come to me and Billy Gibbons Bar. You're like the new tier guy. Yeah. It's Wise River Club between Butte and Dillon in southwest Montana. You got the Big Hole River. You got the Wise River. Pioneer Mountains. Pintler Mountains. We got elk, deer, lion, bear. You name it. We got it. See, my brother. Like, I've been to like 45 of the states. I have not been to Montana yet. Well, you got an excuse now. You know a guy. There you go. And I've not been to Wyoming because we're not really sure that it actually exists. It doesn't. I'm kidding. I've been there a bunch. But my brother went one time and he was hiking and he said that, and he's been all over this country too. And he's like, that's the closest I've ever been to God.

7:18 Yeah. I mean, the whole big sky country thing when you're in. Even me growing up there, I didn't realize that that was a thing because you grow up around it. Then you leave, go to Tennessee, wherever else you go, and then you come back and you're like, whoa! Right? Because it's normal to you when you're growing up. You don't realize, and then you go back and like, holy shit, why did I ever leave here? Yeah, exactly. So it's something to see. So what else you got going on the rest of the year in your busy schedule? Man, we're promoting this new record that just came out in Tire State. It's in Montana. We are out on weekends all of September doing my military charity shoot, shotgun shoot, shooting clay pigeons in Nashville end of the month here.

7:59 And then in August. November we launched with Alter Bridge and we'll be out for over a month of them I think it's November 5th uh beginning of December and then we close out the year with Creed in Las Vegas so. Love it and then totally dig your new album uh and tell everybody about it because to me it sounds like a story to be honest and then you have all these cool people that you've brought on as guests on the album, too. Yeah, man, it is. It's a story of things I've seen, a story of my life, a lot of fun moments, dark moments, even did a couple covers, which is rare. I did a Katy Perry cover. I was like, that's so random. Why'd you do that? I'm like, I have daughters, man, and my daughter made me learn that. And I was like, well, we're going to do a weird cover. Let's do Roar.

8:46 And then me and Gibbons and Slash did Brown Sugar, which was so awesome. I got Jerry Cantrell on the album. Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen, and Robert Patrick opened the album. I knew Charlie and Robert would be involved. I had no idea that Martin Sheen was going to be. The first voice on my record. That's winning. Yeah, that is pretty wild. Charlie's like, I'm going to get my dad on this. I'm like, oh, yeah, cool. And he's like, your dad? Shout out to Charlie. It was his birthday yesterday. Royal Lens on it. If you haven't checked her out, check her out. But my favorite collab is where I went to the Crow Agency concert. the Crow Reservation in Montana, and I recruited a bunch of drummers and singers, Native Americans. Nice. And it turned out really cool. And go watch the video if that doesn't give you goosebumps, and I don't know what to tell you.
